Question Confusion Registering my business name
Hey girls,

Im having a bit of a hard time understanding how to go about registering my biz name.

I contacted my state, spoke via chat and is is what I was told:

Jessica: When registering as a sole proprietorship, there are no fees associated with registering the business name because you can not register a sole proprietorship name in South Carolina.
Jessica: The only fees you will have to pay will depend on the type of business you classify yourself as.
You can register a sole proprietorship and choose a DBA name, you will just not have rights to the name.

As a sole proprietorship, you can not reserve a business name, it will be registered under your name. If you do not want someone to possibly share the same business name as yours, you can classify your business as something other than a sole proprietorship, which allows you to register/reserve a business name.
We have a brochure on our website that may help you in choosing the type of business you want to classify your as. The link to that brochure is: http://www.scbos.com/Business+Inform...es/default.htm
Jessica: May I please have your name and email address?

OK, so Im not sure how to go about this, any advice?

Im not sure how to secure my name and what route to go, I know I will not be up and running for a couple of months but I do not want my name to be taken!

Thanks in advance!

What they are saying is you can do business as CMR'S Virtual Solutions but as long as you are sole you are know as Jessica dba......

You can (and should) apply for an EIN with IRS but you will still be known as Jessica dba... This protects your SSN but you will still file with IRS under SSN and not EIN.

If you want to have rights to CMR'S Virtual Solutions then you need to either become LLC or something other than sole.

You should contact SBA or professional to help you make the choice of what to do.

I am registered as sole Lee Drozak dba My Office Assistant which means I have no exclusive rights to MOA but I am comfortable with that.

I am actually listed through the state as my name d/b/a business name. I then had to go to the county and register there as well.

Chrissy did you apply for your EIN yet? Visit this thread here and it will explain to you how simple it is.

Wait, do you have a UPS Store close by? Go get a box, it is a physical address and you can use that for your business address. When you contact the county/city for you license give them that address. You shouldn't have any problems then.

Great idea!
They did ask me if I owned my residence, do I just say yes, do you think they will ask for proof?
