Thanks Rebecca - I was just curious how you handled that because it's clear you're all set with an alternative to offer people.

I'm so interested in seeing how we're all handling those conversations - because in theory it's easy to tout that we're all business owners, but when it comes down to it with a PC who is insisting on seeing a resume - it's the 'then what?'

I loved your article, by the way - that is a great resource!

I simply remind them that I, like them, am a business owner. And ask them what they send one of their potential clients that wants to see their background or clients they have helped or assisted in the past. I try to educate them on the difference of "employee" and "contractor" and remind them why they are seeking a contractor vs an employee that requires health insurance, vacation/sick time, and if they part ways unemployment insurance that they would have to have in case it is needed. I remind them that as a contractor, they don't "pay" for all those for me, as I am NOT an employee. Normally after that comparison, they are open to the portfolio and testimonials. And if not, they are not the ideal client for me.

Your correct, it is easy to say that your business owner. So far, I have had 1 lady ask for my resume. I explained that I could provide a company portfolio and references. She immediately balked because she wanted an employee for $10 an hour, under the table. Besides that, most of the PC I have spoken with were curious what my company did and how 'we' could help them. One fella had never heard of a VA and thought 'my idea was brilliant'...

I have a professional profile that is similar to a resume that reflects that I am a business owner. If I recall correctly Erin Blaskie had an "Ask Erin Live" one Friday and the topic was discussed. I'm not sure how often Erin reads the forums, but if she is reading, I'm sure she will elaborate

I also have a portfolio with my work. My response is "As I am self-employed, I don't have a resume, however I can provide you with my portfolio, which includes my professional profile, some samples of my work in addition to comments from previous clients"

I use self employed, because right now I don't have an actual business, just working under my own name, however - you could say "As a business owner..."

This is a very interesting conversation. I have noticed that most professionals speakers, coaches etc, have a CV (curriculum vitae) that lays out their experience and why they are an expert in their field. So I tried to take that concept and not script out every detail and job that I’ve had. It may look resumeish, but I don’t have any dates, just experience listed. I've never had anyone ask me for a resume yet, but this style of “resume” is included on my website along with my bio and some graphic design work (portfolio) that I've done in the past.

This thread appeared at just the appropriate time .

Just this week I was contacted [via Twitter ] regarding my Social Media services. First email from this PC was very detailed with explanation of what this PC actually does and what they would be needing as far as SM services. I was very excited, and I replied with a lengthy email on how could I assist with these needs. Upon PCs reply they stated - Your experience sounds just like what I need. Do you have a resume or anything to review? Do you have any references or client list I can persue?

I skyped one of my VA buds and ask her thoughts on this - We both agreed and I replied with - As a business owner I don't offer a resume. However, I do have some testimonials listed on my website you can view them here [url inserted]. PC replied with - Sorry. I didn’t think of it from the perspective that you are a business owner. That makes perfect sense! A phone chat would be great.

I'm sticking to that line from here on out, if I'm ever asked again. That was actually the first and only time I've been asked for one! I'm sure there is a lot of different opinions on this particular subject, but I don't offer a resume.

Great thread! I too as a business owner do not provide a resume. I basically give the same speech already stated and offer to provide them professional references.

I have been concerned about my own response when asked for a resume and have even decided not to apply to certain job offers because I don't have a "VA" resume. I have applied to some offers using a cover letter-type summary of my knowledge, skills and abilities tailored to the duties of the job. Now I'm wondering if this is why I have not gotten any responses to my applications. Should I take my skills and draft them into a traditional resume format? I have gained and honed my skills through years of experience in different jobs/industries, so I can't say I worked as a VA for XYZ company in 1999 and my duties were ABC, etc. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

I followed up on this thread and will (hopefully!) be able to use my professional profile in the future (as well as my references) to validate my skills and obtain new clients.

I think a portfolio is more appropriate than a resume. I have a package with my contract, a questionnaire, rates, flyer and business card. I am a business owner not a employee. I guess you could provide them with a BIO if necessary.
