Question New Client's requests sounds a bit shady...
Since I'm new to this industry I'm excited about each new potential client I get. However, I recently received a request from one that sounds a bit shady. What's the best way to handle this situation without digging too deep and running them off, just in case everything is legit?

Artesia, what gives you this "hinky" feeling about this PC? Anything that makes you feel that something is a bit off I wouldn't hesitate for a second to ask questions. Your reputation (and potentially legal issues) are on the line, so maybe I'm a bit too outspoken when it comes to PC's and delve into things that concern me - in a nice way of course.

Way back when I was on guru, I was so excited because I had a PC. We talked over IM, and when he said, "Unfortunately, I've already filled this position, but I have another opportunity that you might be interested in..." my antenna went up. After many back and forth questions and answers, turns out I was right and what he wanted me to do was unethical and illegal. I reported him to guru and he was removed. FWIW, I don't use guru anymore. Being burned left a bad taste in my mouth.

Even in the corporate world when I was an employee in the mortgage and financial planning industry, my employer wanted me to do something that I SO felt was unethical. I spoke up and would not do it. A couple months later, I quit. Soon after he was investigated and is now in prison. I'm glad I baled when I did! Sorry, got a bit off-topic with this.

Just my 2-cents, but as a business owner, you have the right to ask questions!

Artesia,

Usually you are right on the money if it "feels wrong". Go with your gut and get satisfied answers otherwise politely tell them that you feel that your services will not match their needs or be upfront and politely tell them that you are uncomfortable with their requests. Those RED FLAGS come into our lives for a reason.

Best of luck

Your first mind is your best mind. However, it's great to get confirmation. Ask for references and do your research on this PC luckily the internet has no friends or true secrets!

I agree I would ask plenty of questions for sure. I did bookkeeping for a client that wanted me to change numbers for his bank to get a line a credit, I said no way I am out of here..

Thanks to everyone that took the time to respond, I appreciate it very much! I have since declined the clients offer based on the additional information he provided and my gut feeling.
