Default Inability to Do the Job
I'm interested in knowing the answer to this question: Has anyone taken on an client's task that she/he firmly believes she/he is capable of completing, and then find out (after taking the task) that it is not possible to complete it? This is one of my prevailing fears.

That has not happened to me. But, I feel like I have established a good relationship with all of my clients, so if that situation did arise I could be honest with them about the situation. I think the worst thing that could be done is to let the situation drag out and miss deadlines.

I have not however I do have a client who is always exploring new projects. After we discuss the needs I will let him know if this is something I have to learn and we work out an arrangement.

Generally I do not take on clients whose tasks I know I am not skilled at or tell them upfront that I am not familiar however I am willing to look and learn. I leave it up to them as to what to do. I do have to say that I do have several colleagues in my circle that I can either sub to or pass on the job.

For example I can do basic graphic arts however more in-depth or intense projects I send to someone else.

Thanks, ladies. I guess my "fear" will lessen the more clients I get. There are so many skills that I want to learn, but I would never misrepresent myself as knowing something, when I don't. I would hope that I will have opportunities to learn new skills to suit customer needs.

I say upfront that I'm not experienced in that area but am willing to try. I have yet to have anyone not give me a chance to prove myself. I suppose if they say they are uncomfortable and need someone with experience you can always help them find someone. However, I think them knowing you, plus the fact that you are available and willing, can help shift things in your favor.

Elise, I know that when you're completely honest with a client, they so appreciate it. And assisting them in finding an expert for that particular task will go a long way in the trust department. They will always feel that you would not steer them in the wrong direction.

Elise, your site is delightful! Love the Rudolph toon & the whole cherry/ice cream theme. Very creative!
