Default How do you FIND your clients?
I've been looking into the best ways to find clients, but just curious how you all found yours? Was it through word of mouth, advertising in the local grocery shop, in the news paper? Or did you BID on the freelance sites?

Just curious if there are other avenues to explore ....

There are lots of great posts about this topic right here on this very forum! There are many ways that people find clients and you have mentioned some of the big ones! Networking is key! Just remember that with networking, it's not simply just showing up to an event to exchange business cards, it's relatioship building as well! Once people get to know you , they will become your biggest referral source!

I would definitely keep your options open, but the more important question is have you defined what kind of clients you would like to work with? Narrowing down who would like to work with makes it that much easier to market yourself to!

My clients have mostly come from networking, and 1 from a mail campaign.

Funny enough, both of my initial clients came through my husband...one is a custom home builder he does side jobs for, the other is a mom of a child in my son's preschool class that he was talking to at school one morning. Clients really do come from everywhere, and don't discount your husbands/boyfriends ability to network on your behalf.

My first client was from a business card on a grocery store bulletin board. I received a few more earlier ones from that as well. My newest client was from yp.com, and everything else over the past 14 years has been through yellow page advertising and referrals.

My first three clients all came from referrals.

I'm disappointed in my mailing campaign to date. The second set of cards went out a few weeks ago. I've gotten some calls, but no clients. I'll do one more set of post cards, but then I may re-think the mailers.
