What a nice question..

My first clients were old friends that I knew from ions ago... Good thing..But to be honest, as happy as I was "finding these old friends", my real first client was somebody from Linkedin.

You just never know!

I received my first virtual assistant client via an internship / mentoring program. The internship program is on pause for now, but I am grateful to have slipped in just before it did and was "fitted" with a great mentor and client.

My first client was my very favorite blogger than I followed for awhile. He posted on Twitter one day that he was thinking about getting a VA. I followed up with him and sent him a short and to-the-point email (because bloggers have zero time to read much more than that), and the rest is history.

I'm tellin' ya, Twitter is a great, GREAT way to network and gain clients.

Wow, I enjoyed reading this thread. I do not use Twitter but I'm feeling like it might be something I better look into as I see many people have gotten clients this way. You never knew what hard work or even fate will throw your way!

Referral service, word of mouth, advertising?

Thanks for your responses.
I received my first client through an internship/mentor program. After the program ended, she decided to hire me as a sub-contractor.

The second client came by word-of-mouth, and I am ever so thankful for the referral.

The third client came via an associate of ours.

I serve as a sub in all three capacities. Very happy and pleased. :daisy:

I got my first client thru ODesk and so far it's been a great experience. It's funny but reading Eddna's post made me realize that my dad owns a cleaning business (cleaning companies, stores at the mall) back east, never thought of offering my services (of course I just started) to him.

I did help him way, way back in the day when I was still in high school. Actually, I have quite a few family members with businesses, but I'd have to think about that.

My first client was a solicitor that I used to work for. My partner landed a new job which meant I had to quit my job and move states. I was talking to my old boss a few weeks later and mentioned I was setting up my own VA business. He mentioned they'd had a few more resignations and didn't know what to do and I said "hey, why not send your transcription to me" and the rest.... is history.

These testimonies are very uplifting. I only hope that I have the problem some of you all have and that is too many clients. Please let that be my problem!

Re: How did you get your very first client?
Hi All:

I got my first client by posting on a free VA site. I did not have the opportunities that paying members had, but felt that if someone saw my resume they would ask me to bid. It took about a month for a client to request work from me. I worked with that client for two months and this month I just got another request for bid.

I am just getting started but I am encouraged.

Good luck to all those who are just starting out.

Alberta Godfrey
