Question How did you get your very first client?
Question for everyone:

How did you get your very first client?

Referral service, word of mouth, advertising?

Thanks for your responses.

My sister-in-law is a Realtor so I said "hey, I'll do a freebie for you if you refer me to others." I did a Constant Contact newsletter for her which went to all of her co-workers. One they saw it, the phone started ringing. I even landed a web design job from one of them who had a side business.

Wow, great idea! Around how many jobs did you get from that one referral of your sister-in-law?

My husband belongs to the community group Twitter, and there was an email group with a lead on it. I looked up the client's website, and it was definitely legit and professional. I had all of the qualifications she needed, so I just emailed her my resume and cover letter in a formal email. She emailed me back within a few days. She told me initially it would be a few hours a week (4 to start out with anyways), but we are working on a special project right now. I have about 16 hours this week. She has been so positive and warm. I really like her a lot.

Of course, I got another lead this week and start for him next week and a transcription job as well. I also have another transcription job possibility (might have to turn that one down) and a research position that was my first virtual job. Unfortunately, I don't think I have as much time for it now and will have to tell the client. I don't have enough hours in the day right now.

One thing I love about this is the feedback. When I was a paralegal at large firm, it came to a point where I felt cut off from society. I was just researching and typing all day/night long. I love doing research, but the fact was that it just became a cold position. I'm so outgoing that it started to stifle and depress me. I am not seeing that at all with these jobs. It has reminded me why I love assisting people in the first place.

I relied on my website to get my first job. I'm a search engine optimiser as well as a VA so I optimised my VA site to rank highly on Google. It consistently ranks in the top 3 for my targeted search terms. Within a couple of weeks of the site going "live" I had two enquiries, one from Australia and one from Germany. The German project went through and I am still working with him. The Australian enquiry did not materialise. But even so, I was happy with myself for getting those website leads so soon after launching the site. SEO still plays a large part in my marketing although word of mouth is becoming increasingly important.

I've made my website but once I get all my research done and I'm ready to go, I will work on my SEO and really try to market myself.

I got 2 jobs from my sister-in-law's referral. One was a website and that lady was so happy with my work, she referred me to 2 others. I am in the discussion phase with the other two, but it looks promising.

a live networking meeting...after a couple of times meeting with the group and many of the same people, they felt comfortable enough to try out my services.

I have to admit, I really just got lucky. I am working another long but rewarding week with both of my clients. Sometimes, I get nervous about how to approach things, but so far, it has been extremely positive. It's weird to have people say oh, I know you can do this, and you've never done it before. lol Still, I must be doing something right to get that kind of reaction. I hope it continues to be this way.
