Mary - I know of writers here in Australia being paid $1000 AUD for 4 articles. Charge your full rate and be proud of what you do. Let the tyre kickers kick and practice your elevator speech etc on them. I had a tyre kicker and wrote this post in response on my blog. Keep up the good work and know that there are people out there who do recognise the value of a good writer/VA.

Isn't it encouraging that out of the 350-some VA's surveyed, the average year they started their business was in 2003? That's 5 years in 2008. Cool!

Cheers,

Wow! Great survey! I've been looking for these kinds of VA statistics to include in my business plan for industry (and personal) forecasting purposes. I know that there are quite a few administrative "hobbiests" out there and that for the number of "successful" VA businesses there are probably at least as many (if not more) that go kaput for various reasons. I would love to know those numbers.

I wish it was possible to figure out how many seriously active VAs are out there right now.

Tess, thanks for the information . I'm working on my Market Analysis. Just wasn't sure where to start except to look at websites.

I appreciate the information. I am not one who promotes my writing skills. I have been out of college for over twenty years. It would not be worth it to me to write at that rate. I was a journalist minor and trained that you write simple. We were told to write on a fourth grade level, because that is where most people read. If the writing was involved most would stop reading, even if their reading level was higher. I labor over anything I write.
My husband had a business putting up weekend directional signs. He charged $2.25 per sign per weekend. He had a booming business. Then after 2001, everyone thought it would be an easy business. They charged a $1.00 a sign, before the gas prices surged. They did not consider the wear and tear on vehicle, office expense, taxes, collection fees, etc. They killed the market and most were out of business within two years. He was out because he knew he would lose money at that price.
I think a lot of people do not realize the true cost of a business. We need to charge a rate that is fair to the skills we have.
