I agree with Mak...I always say I'm a Virtual Assistant and then take the opportunity to explain exactly what a VA is and what one can do for them/their business.

I just ordered my first set of business cards and was debating how to refer to myself. I finally decided on "Your Virtual Solutions Partner." That is what my card officially says, but when talking with people, I still call myself a virtual assistant as that phrase seems to be widely used and accepted.

Hi, I started to giggle and shake my head yes when I was reading your post. I also am having the similar complication of people not realizing what the heck a Virtual Assistant is actually. So I decided to say, I am an Executive Administrative Assistant doing all my work virtually through the computer. They understand better this way.

I too, didn't like the sound of "Virtual Assistant". I just...it doesn't even sound like a real occupation! I really like Online Business Consultant. That...that is amazing! Thank you ladies for the wonderful suggestions!

I started calling myself a Marketing Assistant since marketing services are what I provide for my clients. People seem to understand what a Marketing Assistant is better than a Virtual Assistant.

Wow...great details. Business consultant definitely sounds very professional. I think people are scared by virtual even though we've grown so much in the tech industry.

I use the term professional and personal assistant. That seems to be understood a bit more than virtual assistant.

I used to in the beginning but now that my business has evolved to more "mobile" than "assistant" I refer to myself as Digital Analyst because I do more of that kind of work.

I'm migrating my site to a new domain and I'm debating what title to use on my business cards. I'm going to be focusing on administrative assistance and wine event planning & coordination. I was thinking of just going with "consultant" but that seems kind of plain. Reading this thread is making me think of using "business consultant" or "business & event consultant." I havent gone through all my old business cards and they say "virtual assistant and administrative consultant." I dont know, what do you guys think?

I dont want to use virtual assistant because although I explain it to people, half the time they don't really understand and just assume I'm someone's assistant. Administrative consultant has been more successful at being understood so I'd prefer to keep using "consultant" rather than "assistant."

Thought I would add this to help: According to wikipedia, "consultant" is a professional who provides professional or expert advice in a particular area. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consultant

I was thinking more of a "coordinator", which according to wikipedia is another name for administrative assistant. You can read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinator

Hope this helps.

I am only new to the VA industry & am in the startup phase of my business but I am leaning towards using the title of "online administrator" and using "virtual lifestyle & professional assistance" in my tag line.

I am in Australia and the terms "business consultant" and the like often refer to very senior consultancy roles and therefore wouldn't position my company correctly.

Unfortunately, the business world still has a stigma about an "assistant" as previously stated. I have to agree I like the title of administrative consultant very much. I think that is what I will adopt for myself on my business cards as well. Thanks for the great dialogue.

This is a really good question and I've enjoyed reading the responses. When I first pitched my idea to start my on VA business, I too got that "What the....?!" stare! Having to go into such great detail about exactly what I do JUST to explain the title versus gaining the PC can be a bit overwhelming (especially for a newbie like myself).

I am becoming more and more fond of the word "consultant" myself as a result.

I say that I provide administrative services and work from my home office. As far as my title, I am the owner of my company, so owner it is.

I am now in the relaunching phase after having children and giving up the first time around. When I did networking events before, the words virtual assistant got me lots of confused looks. I found that I ended up explaining what a VA is more than selling myself at these things. People around my neck of the woods aren't quite as open to all things virtual! The word has a complicated connotation around here I think. This time, I haven't really decided what to call myself but I have chosen a name without virtual assistant in it. I think I'm going with

ETC Administrative Services.

What do you think? My tag line will be

Secretarial, Bookkeeping...ETC

Still working on the logo but I think the name says a lot. Anyway, off to work on the many details that are taking over my life!

Thanks,
Norma

The title I use is Administrative Consultant since I provide administrative services to my clients. I was using virtual professional because my business has the initials VP but I mostly go by Administrative Consultant. To me this sounds more professional and more of a business owner type. I do use virtual assistant as labels on my website and because the term is more known to prospective clients who needs a virtual assistant. It just depends on what title you feel best describes what you do and your preference.
