I have found "On-line Office Assistance" is understood by most people.

I use the phrase "virtual assistant" in my business name. I do not say that I am an office assistant because I can do graphic design and websites too, not just office work.

What a great thread! Great ideas! I too struggle with the title because I want to encompass all I do including being a business owner and not an employee. How about one of the following?
- Independent Administrative Professional
- Online Administrative Professional
- Online Business Administrative Professional
- Online Business Administrative Specialist

I was wondering the same thing! The blank look I get from people when I say I am VA is almost unavoidable I have found. I have recently tried Administrative Consultant and even though there is quite a bit of explaining that goes along with the introduction but it seems to be halved. It seems to translant a little better for most at least...

Another great thread, so pleased I found this Forum!!! Isn't funny how many people do not understand what VA means???

Well I am off now to work on my elevator pitch as well, still uncertain what to call myself!

I title myself, Virtual Administrative Consultant and when possible, throwing in the terms, Founder/Owner. I still, like the rest, still have to explain all that I do and some still don't understand. We have to work on a good solution to this!

I think I like what Quades titles herself, Virtual Administrative Consultant. The last two are a little too long and could be a mouthful.

Would Executive Administrative Consultant work as well?
I refer to myself as an Executive Virtual Assistant. I would like to change to Administrative consultant instead. Can I add Executive in front?

I really like all of the responses about this topic. I am just starting out and I named my company Smart Office Solutions Virtual Assistance.... SOS VA - I like the idea of Business Consultant. I have an Organizational Development background so I'm going to focus on a business as a whole looking for process improvements on every level.

My only concern is by having a title as Business Consultant intimediate small businesses who are fearful of "consultants". Does calling youself a Business Consultant and taking Virtual Assistant (or Assistance) out of your title/off your website and marketing tools decrease potential clients from finding you?

Hi: I like Administrative Consultant and think I will use it for office duties. But my main thrust is to work with authors and with them I would stick with the Virtual Author's Assistant.

I tend to refer to my self as a virtual assistant because I work virtually and I assist businesses. If people don't get it then I explain.

I'm restructuring my VA services, title, and website to line-up with my recent talents. I'll start-off working my VA business part-time as I continue to work full-time as a loan officer/business consultant. After reading the various helpful threads, I'm now thinking of using Specialist in my title instead of Consultant for my VA business. Thanks All!

I do use the term "virtual assistant" but I also make sure in my communications with future and current clients that I define my skill sets and services. I think however that using the term "virtual admin assistant" would be more appropriate for me. I may change to that in the near future.

Wow, a lot of great alternatives to VA on this thread! I like Virtual Administrative Professional or Administrative Consultant a lot and might use that rather than VA.

It might be helpful to describe you business using your 30 second commercial which which may go something like" I provide administrative support services to small and mid size businesses". Then as previously stated let your business card give the technical term.

After working for over 25 years as either an administrator or assistant, I find that the word "assistant" is looked upon as subservient. I just left a job with a top 5 research university and I was executive assistant to the dean and administrative services manager. Before my administrative coordinator title was upgraded to administrative services manager, many faculty and others thought I just made copies, type and assist the dean with dictation, when actually, I was the office manager, supervisor of the administrative team, communications coordinator, faculty recruiting coordinator and editor and co-writer for our school newsletter. In speaking with others about my new VA business, the term "assistant" gave many the impression that VA's are only secretaries, when we are independent contractors who own their own practices and are so much more. I know that I'm just starting as a VA, but I find it easier to explain that I have a virtual administrative services practice that helps the business owner have more time to grow their business while we manage their administrative responsibilities. I think the word "assistant" diminishes the value of our practice, and that we should use the words "virtual administrator" from now on. I realize that it's my personal experience, but building the value of what we do is very important to keep us viable and be the more attractive choice for businesses over temps or other secretarial services. That's my two and a half cents folks; sorry for the lengthy response. Cheers!

There are a lot of different takes on this, very interesting. I've never actually been an administrative assistant (I've got the skills, they were part and parcel of my other jobs) but I don't think of it as a negative. I'm working on my "elevator speech" and I actually haven't used the words administrative, assistant or virtual. It's not that they don't describe what I do, or how I do it, I'm just finding other words.

"I'm a Time Goddess ;-) I give back hours in your day by doing the the time consuming tasks that take away from what you do best, generate income for your business" That's all I've got so far. I've got to get rid of that second "time". It's a work in progress.

I have been using the word virtual for 10+ years so the title " Virtual Assistant" comes natural to me, plus some people don't know what it means and I use this as a stepping stone for my elevator speech, people get hooked and find it very interesting. So, yes, I like to use Virtual Assistant.

I am all for using the term virtual assistant. Out of all the titles I've used to describe my work, VA is the only one that truly encompasses all that I do for a living. I've been calling myself a ghostwriter, as that's the focus of my work, but I do so much more than write.

Once I embraced virtual assistance, a world of resources were at my finger tips... including this forum. For me, being a virtual assistant is a badge of honor.
