I use the term Virtual Assistant, but on the back of my business card I have a definition of what that means to help explain it.

I do call myself a Virtual Assistant. Depending on the direction my business takes in the next year I may have to amend it to whatever makes me most identifiable to my target market.

Everyone has to do what they are most comfortable with. There may be a stigma attached to the title, but the way I see it, people can call me anything they want as long as they don't call me "out of work."

So true! Everyone has their preference and it depends a lot of where you are based. I am based in the Canary Islands (Spain) and the translation does kind of give the impression of being a subordinate so I took that on board as well because the term isn't known here at all and to throw the word "assistant" into the mix would cause me more hassle in the long run so I went a different route but the work description is the same. May the work keep pouring in...

Ive had a lot of people give me a blank stare when i say virtual assistant...its harder to explain because i think they tune you out at that point. I now say Business Support Specialist or start off with the fact that I own my own business. The questions after that are easier to answer....

After reading a blog post regarding this topic, I think I'm going to use Administrative Consultant. I do not plan on changing my business name though, which includes 'Virtual Assistance' in it.
I like the ring to this:
LaVon S.
Administrative Consultant
Owner, Midwest Virtual Assistance

Now, I just need to work on my elevator speech!

I too like Administrative Consultant and Business Consultant.

I have found that many people really have no idea what a Virtual Assistant is or what to associate with it. I worry that they will tune out as soon as they hear "virtual assistant" so using Administrative Consultant and/or Business Consultant seems like a great idea.

Carol Anne, I absolutely LOVE your intro/elevator speech. It will be my inspiration when drawing up my own.

I use my elevator speech in networking. I rarely use the word "virtual" because so many people don't understand what it means. I call myself an Administrative Consultant.

When I did the SEO for my website the words "VA" had minimum clicks/competition/recognition. So I switched to using "outsourcing" in my marketing content.

What if we considered using the term 'Virtual Assistant' actually as an opportunity for your elevator speech? Did you arouse your listeners' curiosity when you used the phrase? And once you had done that did you capitalize on it to promote your business? Would saying Business Consultant for example have raised that level curiosity and given us the chance to deliver the specifics. Something to think about.

It would be interesting to actually find out from our listeners whether they were now more informed, whether they now understood how they could use our services or generate referrals.

I have one full-time client, and just signed my second for project work only (until we get to know each other a little better). My full-time client is starting to refer me out to his network (yay!) and in "selling" my business to his peers, he often refers to me as his "on-line business manager" more than his "VA." My duties have expanded to include controlling his social media, writing blog posts, updating his website, developing his marketing materials, following up on leads, bookkeeping, etc.

We both agree that my role is now more of a traditional office manager. I'm curious what those with more experience than I have think about an "online business manager."

Malaika,
I tend to label more as a Virtual bookkeeping business. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with the term virtual assistant however , the word assistant I believe might not be so good for marketing purposes. I would appreciate others intake on this

Offshore Virtual Bookkeeping I believe is good and very important for me to include Offshore
this will create transparency as people will know I am providing services from Pakistan and not from USA.

I use Business Support Specialist. But i find that the title alone never says enough - it's a succinct statement of services.

I like Administrative Professional. Or maybe Business Professional. I'm trying to think of a name for my company incorporating one of those (I haven't registered my business name yet so it wouldnt be a problem to change).

Independent Contractor isn't bad other than the fact that I have a tendency to spell Independent wrong.

Consultant implies that you won't be doing work yourself, and that other people just ask you how to do it. I can understand maybe if you are someone that has twenty years in your industry and has made the companies you work for millions of dollars (I know one person that would be perfectly justified in using the Consultant term as he is very very good at what he does and worth every penny), but it doesn't seem right for what is basically a distanced based assistant.

Such a great thread with so many valuable ideas. I, too, get a blank stare when I say Virtual Business Manager/ Virtual Assistant... I'll try "independent contractor providing xyz services..." and see how it goes.

As much as I like the term Consultant, I agree that it sounds too much like and "advice giver" and not someone who actually does the work. Business Management Professional... Or independent business management professional...
