Default Trying to establish my niche
Okay, I think I kind of gotten the idea of establishing my niche. But I would like to know if I am going in the right direction with this. Im considering the mobile notary, but would rather start out with some type of small business planning assistance. I enjoy helping others more than anything. I was wondering what will this be considered. I also will like to do workshop and training on work at home jobs. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Have you picked your ideal client or target market? I would start there and then develop your workshops and training based on that group. Once you have a clear idea of who you will be servicing you will be able to hone your services.

As for planning assistance, I am testing out a service for local clients where I go into there office, work with them to develop processes and streamline their procedures. My current client does heavy sales in his business so we are working on automating all his processes so he can bring on other sales team members. We are also coming up with a business manual for all the steps of his business.

I second what Lee says. Define your ideal client and you will then be able to develop your products and services around their needs.

And I wanted to add that don't think that when you find a specific niche, it will limit your business. I thought the same thing and see that it's a very common belief.

But all the seasoned VAs will tell you that when you pick a specific niche, you can hone in on that market because you will learn what they need, where their pain points are, and how you can help them.

I'm relatively new also but finding my niche has helped me a lot.

My niche kind of found me. I specialize in helping educators, creative folks of all kinds (e.g., writers, musicians, artists, and actors) and the perpetually technically challenged. That last one especially fell into my lap through referrals.

I even have one client - an international educational consultant - who will only use a phone and a fax machine. She refuses to even turn on a computer.

I started my business in Jan of this year and I do not have any clients yet but thats ok because I have been mainly focusing on taking classes & reading (A LOT) to know everthing that there is to know about being a VA and what I have found is, that can be exhausting. I took the VA class that VAF offers which was very helpful. Because of that class I have been lucky enough to meet some really awesome VA's that have a good amount of expeirinece and the things I learned from the class and the VA's has been very valuable information. I am going to focus mainly on social media but there are sooo many different things to offer.

I don't have a niche yet, I work with small biz solopreneurs - basically one-man-band entrepreneurs. I provide admin services and anything else that they need that I can handle. I like it LOL so I guess I found my niche...

I want to look after small businesses but in reading the starting a VA business by Tess, it says that that is not enough. It is too broad. But small business are made up of many industries. What are you thoughts on this? Does anyone else work with small businesses from a variety of industries?

I think that Tess means that specialization is the trait that will help you establish your business. It may sound easy to help small businesses increase their efficacy but think of this: a family accounting office is a small business, an online tutoring business is one as well, a small e-shop is a small business yada yada yada
Can you be above competition in everything? I mean, can you be exceptional, in
building and maintaining a website
producing content
managing correspondence
managing sales
implementing a growth strategy
organizing the marketing campaigns
drafting and editing documents
keeping books
being a customer representative etc?

I have no doubt that you are a skillful and versatile VA but you'll realize it by yourself...only specialization leads to establishment. You should find what specific advantages define you and what duties can you undertake successfully.

Think as a business owner, not as a freelancer. How many successful business owners have you met that do a bit of everything?? Chances are zero. And broadening your services sector does not mean that chances to land a contract are increased.

I always thought to myself "You are not a super-market selling everything. You are an delicattessen (my french are bad, I know) offering goodies just for a few elite clients who walk the whole city trying to find this specific piece of cheese to buy"

If I still haven't convinsed you, at least I made you laugh!!!

Cheers!

I am also having a hard time establishing my niche so that I do not over-extend myself trying to do too many projects. I really like the idea that Lee had about planning assistance for small businesses. I would love to be able to help small businesses organize in the early stages so that they can run more efficiently and withstand the strain of owning a business.

I have been thinking about it and have decided my niche is coaches and health & wellness, it just makes sense, they are very similar with similar needs. I am a health coach myself and the clients I work with while not strictly health & wellness are into some sort of coaching/consulting business.

I truly believe that each individual has a special purpose and only that individual can decide what that purpose is...no one can do everthing. However, you must decide what you can do successfully and leave it at that..sometimes you may have to say "no" or maybe just refer those projects to others.

My niche is solo practice lawyers/small law firms, but I haven't figured out how in the heck to market to them. Therefore, no clients!!
