We all lack confidence at one time or another, especially with such a big step as owning our own business. The desire to be successful, will help you build that confidence. I doubt myself a lot, then you have a forum like this, and resources, etc.. to help you.

Remember everyone is your cheerleader on these forums, so hang in there, and guess what? You are virtual, so no one can see the fear in your eyes, fake it till you make it, and you will believe it too. I mean fake the confidence thing not your skills, learn them. lol
Learn what you can at your own pace, take classes, read, use the resources, and start your business with what you know and grow.

Such an inspiring thread!

I'm one of the newbies/VA wannabe, and the range of services I've seen here is really impressive!

I´m trying not to agonize too much on choosing my niche and target market, but - help - it feels overwhelming in the beginning.

In an in-office environment I'm really good at anything with languages and teaching office applications (not even part of my PA job description :P), so the hope is that this can somehow be offered also as a VA - would be fab!

I'm going to kick myself in the butt, get my business going and hopefully post my list here soon

Thanks so much Sundi for starting this post - motivating, encouraging and also very clarifying to what is out there.

(And - what a helpful, friendly environment in this forum. Amazing!)

Vibeke

I know exactly how you feel. We've had our business for 2 years or so, and my side (admin) has barely gotten off the ground. Take time and really think about it. The results will be more than worth it.

Two years later I've FINALLY found mine, and it comes totally from experience of taking care of my mother (trust me; that's tough under the best of circumstances). But I know this is something I can do, something I can blog about regularly, and it's a booming business. The downside? I will have to set up a whole new business so that my husband can keep the paralegal side of the old one.

I wish you well, and come on back here as many times as you need to. Like I say, we've all been there.

I'm adding Wine Event Coordination to my niche because I had the opportunity to work parttime at a couple of wine businesses since January. I never had the opportunity to put on a wine event from start to finish and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I put on a few of the events and it was a great way to learn the ins and outs, make friends with wine bloggers and potential partnerships.

Wow, this thread was interesting. Some of you have some very interesting and unique ideas!

When I started out in 2009, I had no clue where I was going. I was desperate for money, had a small number of marketable remote skills, and a deep IT background. I ended up working for my preferred niche even before realized I was doing it, and haven't looked back.

I'm working on getting set up, but I know what services I can provide, and what Industry I want to support. It's very specific, but golly gee, there are a lot of really screwed up Agencies out there.

What I have been doing:
Project Management for small Digital Agencies and Internet Entrepreneurs (Via Upwork, which I hate these days)

What I am launching in 2016
Niche: Consulting and Retainer Packages that offer quick solutions to struggling Digital Agencies that want to scale up.
Industry: Internet Marketing, Advertising
(On my OWN terms, my way, no interference from micro-managing Freelancing Sites)

And maybe, in 2017, because I could (Lots of Digital Agencies use Independent Contractors):
Upwork Freelancer Consulting
Niche: Newbie Upwork Freelancers
Industry: Training

LOL One might ask why I don't just create my own Digital Agency. I thought long and hard about this. It was a question of freedom, something I take very seriously.
