I have been go around and about and think that I have finally came up with my niche. I think I'm going to stay in the field I am currently in which is Human Resources (hopefully if won't be to difficult). Now my next thing to do is figure out what type of businesses do I want to target. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I'd say that the type of businesses you target should be reflective of your own preferences and interests and of course you'll want to take into account which industries can make use of your HR experience... What specific services will you offer?
I'm not familiar with that career so I'd have a hard time making recommendations.
Maybe if you brainstorm a list of potential markets and post back we can help you decide which you would most enjoy.
You might consider targeting small benefit brokerage houses or small consulting firms that focus on specific areas of HR (performance management, exec comp, retirement)...break down the various components of HR into smaller pieces and then start targeting companies/consultancies that work in those HR niche areas. From experience, get as targeted as possible, the more targeted you are the more opportunities you'll receive. It just seems to work that way for me at least.
I'd agree with Alyssa. Serve the long tail of the H.R industry. Don't make your ideal client too broad, focus on the needs of a few and provide really high quality support in return.
There are potential niches which are yet to be uncovered in many industries and can still provide you with a great source of income.
Great advice. I'm a newbie with a broad range of HR experience but I feel like I will be selling myself short if I don't offer services for all my skills.
