Default I think I figured out my niche: A niche of all trades!
Please don't think I'm crazy! I have come to realize that I really love and enjoy such a wide range of work. Don't get me wrong, I think it is fantastic to really focus on a particular type of client or a particular skill. I really wanted to do that as I developed my business. I went back and forth with myself ... do I like working with X client more than Y client? Do I prefer doing this over that? But I came to the conclusion that the answer is "not really." I love working with so many different types of clients. I work with authors, writers, cops, psychologists, surgeons, stock brokers, consultants, and of course free spirits. I love transcribing, but I love taking care of a client's back office or even personal tasks as well. Proofreading and editing? Hand it over! A perfect presentation you say? Please let me do it! You need front row seats? Let me see what I can do! At the end of the day, it's the passion for what we do that counts! I have just realized my New Year's revelation. My niche is a niche of all trades, and I am thrilled to have finally found my niche. And I just truly love what I do!

Patty,

Good for you! I too do it all and have certain tasks that I like more than others but the variety keeps me from getting bored and on my toes.

Glad to know that you are comfortable with your decision and doing what you love to do.

Patty, so very nicely said.

I think the point about running your own business is just that, it's yours. While it's good to consider how other people run theirs, you need to be true to yourself. If it works, and clearly for you it does, then go for it.

Wishing you continued success and happiness for 2012

I agree, I love being involved in a range of projects. I was laughing with a friend on Friday because that day I closed the latest edition of the newspaper I collaborate with in the morning, met with a real estate client straight after and scored a client who wants me to do the admin for his small apartment complex.

The diversity keeps me from getting bored even though I generally do focus more on real estate. I do admire those VA's who have businesses that have one speciality but everyone is different.

Happy New Year's Eve everyone!!!

Hi Patty! Loved reading what you said, and that is so me, too! I only do transcription, but I do lots of different types of transcription and with lots of different types of clients...and I love it all! Was reading something on LI today about how important it is to have a niche, but I don't want to settle in to just one type of client, etc. I like the diversity, I learn so much, and it keeps me from getting bored...LOL!

You know what is funny about this is that I read all he time about how you "should" find your niche, or that you "should" try to specialize. I have always had to keep in mind that I have a business for a reason - it's mine and I can do what I want.

Stemming from a corporate background, I have vast knowledge in a variety of areas. I have owned my business for many years now and I have never EVER been able to really happily narrow down a specific niche or specialty. And, boy. I have racked my brain many times trying to figure it out. I give up and realize that like some of you, I get bored quick. I completely appreciate those who specialize and think it's awesome, but for me, variety is the spice of life. I am going to go with that. Sounds good, anyway, right?

So, for me, this thread is refreshing. Thank you for that!
