Default Experience in General Contracting, but....
Still looking for my niche...

I have been running my husband's general contracting business for many years so I really understand that industry.

However, with the downturn in the construction industry and the fact that, unfortunately, some small contractors can be a bit flighty, I'm not sure I want to focus myself in this area. I'm not sure where my niche lies.

Any ideas on any other niches that might be a good match?

My previous experience was as a legal assistant and in corporate finance.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you may have on this.

The downturn in the industry may make for more clients who are looking to get the work done but cannot afford a traditional employee. However, if you don't like the work then go with your other background.

With all three backgrounds you could have a niche but keep your general knowledge to attract other clients as well.

Suzanne, one quick word of encouragement... when the new administration picks up I'm sure the 'money will get turned back on' (as a client of mine so eloquently put it! ) and I doubt the market will stay in such a slump - don't forsake what you know and love completely! I think Lee made a great point!

I agree. There are a lot of general contracting business where I live and they are all small businesses. They don't have the money to hire a lot of employees. Jump on that since you know it so well.
