Smile Transfering your domain???
Hope you can help me with these questions.

A friend of mine bought a domain name with http://www.123-reg.co.uk but she is not very happy about the templates available. I was considering buying a domain here (low prices) but before doing this I want to make sure I can transfer my address to another provider. Is this possible? Is there usually a charge involved? What is registrar? what does update the DNS mean?

Is it possible to buy a domain name with one company and e-mail service with another?

Too many questions but I hope you can help me.

Thanks for your help.

The registrar is the company you purchased the domain from. Yes, you can transfer the domain to another host after purchasing, but not all companies make it easy and often you have to wait 60 days. Typically, the process includes going into the settings and "unlocking" and then calling the registrar to get a transfer authorization code. Once you have those and have met any waiting period requirements, you can work with your new host to transfer to domain. I have never paid a transfer fee - only a renewal fee to the new registrar and the monthly hosting. Some hosting companies include email, so check before you go out and purchase that service separately.

Good luck!

Thank you Lori. Only one more question...

The renewal fee is paid after your domain has expired or at the time that you join the new hosting company?

From my experience, you have to pay the renewal fee when you transfer to the new company. Have you considered GoDaddy.com? I've found them to be quite reliable, with some of the best prices around.

I have but there are different reviews saying their e-mail service is not reliable. I have no experience about designing websites so I need a company that can offer nice templates. Do you have any in mind?

Yadira, you don't have to move from one registrar to another if you want to host your site somewhere else. Registration and hosting are two sep. matters and need not be managed at the same place.

Just decide where you want to host and the new webhost will give you their DNS information (also called 'nameservers') - you'll then update your domain's listed nameservers in your account with the registrar.

DNS "points" your domain at the correct server (that of whoever is hosting your site).

Hope that helps!

On the subject of godaddy, I called their support line last week to initiate a transfer for a customer. The agent was quite patient and helpful.
