Re: Are there any decent free web hosting sites?
Copy of my other post regarding 000webhosting.com...

Please do your homework. I also checked out this site to determine why I should be paying someone else for hosting when this one is free.

Here's what I found:

1. To host your web site is free. No catch, no gimmicks (well not initially).

2. They then offer you an "Affiliate Program" where they will pay you to recommend others to their site (by placing a link/ad etc on your web site). You have to wait until you get a minimum number of recommendations before they will pay you. However, they have many many many complaints from people who have never been paid even after recommending them hundreds of times. It seems a new excuse is made as to why they won't pay you. They then either ignore you or cancel your account.

If you do further research on the 'Net, then you will find that this web site is owned by and affiliated with some very unsavory characters. They even own some other "Tech Review" sites where they give good reviews of this site (to drive up traffic I am sure).

So, several things to remember:

1. This might be an ok deal for the free hosting... for a while (don't complain if your web site and all it's data disappears).

2. Nothing in this life worth having is free... except love.... and that might cost you some love back.

In my opinion, for the price of a fancy coffee once a month at the local coffee shop, I can get a guaranteed no gimmick hosting provider to host my web site. My business and my customers deserve it.

additional comments (the $5/mo offer by this forum owner is a great deal). I have not looked into MS Office Live but I tend to shy away from anything controlled by Microsoft. This doesn't mean it's not a great service, being in the tech field for over 15 years, I just tend to look elsewhere by habit.

I tried the free hosting at http://www.freehostia.com. They don't have any ads on the webpage. But there is your basic CPanel to organize your website. You must be website suave to get stuff going on this, as there is NO customer support. But I bought my domain at godaddy, changed the dns to freehostia and used their free scripts. I am currently in love with the Joomla! 1.5 elephante script. They have it preloaded on the website. However, if this Content Management System is how you want to go, Joomla! 1.5 or even Joomla! 1 is the cat's meow.

There are a few glitches with the www.freehostia.com Joomla! prescript. So PM me if you want the "how to fix it" and I will walk you through the process. Hey, if I can figure it out, anyone can.

I love Joomla! because I didn't have to make the website "template" at all, there are tons of websites that offer free Joomla templates. like www.siteground.com, which someone else mentioned for website hosting I think...

Best of luck!

I have not been to tickeled with any webhost I have used for free - they are always too restrictive or have too many ads on them.

For a mere 30 per year you can have a cpanel 1 site through serversanddomains.com. You can also host more up to 10 sites on the same hosting plan. I have been with them for years and find they do pretty well in customer service (in the beginning I was spoiled by the owner always taking phone calls - now they have a help desk so it is not as personal but they get back to you pretty fast). I also adore the 5 SQL databases, Fantasico, 100 emails and the rest.

I just don't do free really well, but hey NEARLY free is great!

I've never heard of serversanddomains.com. $30 per year does sound very appealing.

Hi David, I was just trying to suggest "free host" as the original poster was asking for free. If the question was for a cheap web host then I would suggest globat.com as one of our sites is hosted there.

Anyways, thanks for your input. Just have a question though, what if you don't accept the offer of their "affiliate program" I mean is that possible? Or you need to accept it or else they cancel your account?

Also you can easily back up your website right just in case they cancel your account.

I still think though, if you want free then you should be more careful like backing up your website more frequently.

Hi guys,

I've been researching this very subject so was glad to see the posts.

I looked up "cheap web hosting" lists and the one I see consistently at the top of the list is www.justhost.com, and there's also one called www.hostgator.com that gets good reviews. You might check those out too.

For me personally, I wouldn't go w/ a free hosting service.

I use HostMonster - have had great luck with them and their rates are reasonable.

Just a word of warning with Office Live:

* If you use Mac then you can only access OL via mozilla (you can download it for free! )
* If you want to upload your own website then you can BUT only if you have MS Vista. Luckily I have it at work and I'll be allowed to upload my site tomorrow during my break BUT if you aren't on vista then it will be very difficult to upload your own content on there - i even downloaded the uploader file from the ol site but it didn't work for me even on XP! :grr:

However, OL will work for mac users for their basic site layout, but I personally think it looks ugly.

Brand unveiling of my website tomorrow!

YES YES YES
(sorry for the caps)....but I felt the same way and I researched for a long time...I now have Hostgator.com and I feel they are terrific! I have called them at all hours and always get help. I even tested them before signing up with them. They are in Tx I believe and one day when there was very bad weather down there I called to see if their support would be down and nope, they answered! The tek people are professional and nice and they even know what they are talking about. You can even try it out month to month. That's what I am on but am now going to the yearly.. I had initially went with Startlogic.com. They were good until I had a question. I emailed them, called them multiple times. I finally got some of my money back but that was after my lawyer sent them a letter but after putting in a formal complaint with their local Consumer Affairs Dept..So I definitely would recommend Hostgator.com highly. If you take a look at http://hostgator.com. you will see that they have received a large amount of awards.
