Default Separate Company for Domain and Hosting?
In my research on the web and also in this forum I have come across comments that it is preferable to use a separate company for hosting than the one you registered your domain name with. Reasons? Comments?
I was thinking of keeping it all together with the same provider.

Thanks
Betty

I read the same thing online and for that reason I have my domains with GoDaddy and my hosting with WebHostingHub.

I think the reason people don't like registering both with the same company is because some hosting companies resell your domain to a third-party company and sometimes it's registered under their company name instead of yours. So before you purchase both with the same host, just make sure sure they will register the domain under your own name so you don't have a problem taking it with you if you want to change hosts.

I haven't heard much about splitting them, but I know I've used iPage.com for both domain and hosting for about two years, no complaints.

Good question. I've been using www.domainsinseconds.com for both domain and hosting. $3.22 per month for hosting...with a 3-year hosting plan. I haven't found any other company that comes close to this cost. Their customer service is 24/7 and I've had all my questions answered within 1-5 minutes. I like them...!

I've never had a high level of success with keeping them on the same company. One of the issues I ran into recently is that some companies offer you a free domain when you buy their service (iPage, I'm looking at you), but if you discover that their service is subpar and leave, you have to pay a higher-than-normal fee to keep that 'free' domain.

Over the years, I've changed hosts for my sites probably five times. Since I have all of my hosting with GoDaddy it isn't a heroic endeavor for me to change actual hosts. To me it's akin to not keeping one's eggs all in one basket.

Thanks Paulette and Luke for your replies. I've now got a better understanding of the pitfalls of keeping domains and hosting with the same company. The last thing I want is to lose my domain name!

Terry and Sandy, looks like you are both really happy with your hosting company's. That's where I'm at now, picking a good host company that offers reliability, good service and then cost. I haven't even written my content yet though, so I should really be concentrating on that. Hmmm, so much yet to do !!!

I am just learning about Websites, hosting and domain names. If I understand this all correctly, I need to purchase a domain name, a hosting company and sesign a website. Any suggestions on the website would be appreciated. I am not well skilled in this area and on a tight budger.

I registered with GoDaddy and originally hosted with them, as well. I ended up switching hosting to Hostgator 'cuz we got a better price on 3 domains as a package. i've never had problems with either company.

Wordpress.org is a great place to build your website. I assume you don't know HTML or CSS. If that's the case, and you go with wordpess, you may want to look into purchasing a wordpress theme for your site.
