Default Register Domain as public?
Hi all,

Just wanted to see how you all register your domains - public or private?

I'm so schooled in the "don't put personal info on the net", that I'm having issues with it! I've not done this before, so I come to you.

At the same time, I (sort of) see the benefit of putting info out there for my business. Do people look up the whois information?

Sarah

I check whois information all the time when researching businesses and websites. If I see one that is marked as private it makes me wonder why. Just my 2 cents.

I am registered as public.

I am registered as private because I don't like the complete access available. If someone wants to know who owns the site, all they have to do is visit.

Thank you both for your thoughts! I guess it's a comfort level sort of thing, huh? Still not sure which way I'll go, but both sides have valid points.

leedrozak - do you get a lot of spam/junk mail from being registered as public?

No, although I have Google Apps for Business so much gets filtered out. I actually get more spam from my contact form for those who are trying to get me to increase my SEO or selling me another service.

I agree with Office Goddess. I only register as private nowadays. If someone wants info, they can go to your site. Automated info harvesters can't scan your WHOIS info if it's private. For me, it definitely adds to my comfort level.

It shouldn't be that much more expensive either. Two lattes is all it cost me...

I registered mine as public. From what I know it's best to post it as public rather than private because people tend to look you up in the whois information. If you ain't hiding anything, might as well post it as public. Since it's a business, anyway. If you're wary about putting your home address, just get a PO box and enter that.
