Default Help picking a web host
Hello everyone,

I have a newbie question, O.K, I know you've all discussed this A LOT. I have read everything I could find on this board regarding web hosts. I haven't heard this one mentioned before- blue host. Does anyone have experience with this provider? I am not versed in HTML yet and this sight seems both professional and user friendly. I also want to use someone who allows or has fantastico since I read on this site that makes the process easier. I'd like to spend no more that $10.00/mo. Thanks

I use GoDaddy for $4.99/month - it comes w/a free 5-page website option and templates to start your site.

Virtual Assistant Forums also offers website hosting at $5/month...

I use MomWebs.com and I just realized they have Fantastico. They have great rates and customer support.

I just started using bluehost a few weeks ago for something I am doing for my mom. They have great support. They also have easy installation of some scripts too, such as shopping carts, forums, etc. So far I really like them and they are at a great price. I just added a second domain to my account a few minutes ago. I had to call and verify my account, but it was a 2 minute process and very easy. So far so good.

Before them I used Homestead. I have to say they are good for beginners and simple websites. I use them for my VA website and am pleased with them too.

Hello!

I'm using TildaHosting with our own Kylie Short of Tilda Virtual Services. The service is never down and the customer service is awesome!

Tess also has hosting service available through Virtual Assistant Forums

Thanks for your input everyone. I researched blue host a bit more before theessentialva posted. I was a bit scared off from the reviews I had read. I decided to go with MS Office Live instead. I may change in the future to bluehost, glad to hear you have a good experience with them. Wish me luck!

I use Host Gator as my web host and I love it. They have 24/7 support if you ever run into problems.

I'm trying to use Kompozer instead of MS Office Live to design my site. For my tastes MS was WAY underpar in the design aspect. I'll then try to use MS Office live as just a host..fingers crossed.

Well this didn't work. MS Office Live needs htm files, and KompoZer uses html...try as I may I am not able to save my files as htm in KompoZer grr.., or change them in Windows Vista.

next Question- Can anyone who uses KompoZer to design their web sites recommend a web host? I'd like a free one but an inexpensive host would be appreciated as well. KompoZer is more important to me so I'm willing to give up on MS Live, I do love their 24/7 phone support. I was on the phone w/ them at 4 a.m. today-they still couldn't help me though!

Celestine- Aptana creates .htm files and it is also free. I use it and it comes highly recommended from the guy who wrote the html & css for dummies book. He also reviewed Kompozer and said it was good, but that he prefered Aptana.

As far as free webhosts, I ran across doteasy the other day. They require that you buy a domain name from them, but they will host it for free. I did a little research about them, and they seemed like a viable option for free and no banner ads.

theessentialva, I'm looking at Aptana. It's above my head, by about a couple of miles. Even the forums make no sense to me. Is there a site you know that breaks this stuff down for people who went to public school? I'm going to do some searching on my own, I just thought you might know of something. Much Appreciated.

Celestine- It really can be pretty basic or can be much more advanced. The website kinda overwhelmed me too. It was on the disk that was included with the for dummies book and I got it off of there. You really only need to download the Aptana Studio for basic use. I suggest downloading it and just playing with it.

After I opened it up I just opened a new html document and it gave me the basic html outline to work with. Then I opened up a new css document and it gave me body {} to start with. They are tabs at the top of the work area, so you have your html on one tab and the css on the other tab and you can switch back and forth. At the bottom of the html work area there is a source tab, and then there are tabs for the different browsers on your pc. You can write the code and then click on the tabs at the bottom to see how it will look in each browser.

That is pretty much the basics. I know it can do much more than that. Because I am just learning, for the most part it is all I use. So far I really like it. It is really very easy to use and has some very helpful features. For example, when you start typing in css code it will give you a drop down list that tells you the options for what you have started typing (ie. start typing margin and the drop down list will give you margin, margin-bottom, margin-left, margin-right, etc.). I have learned some css commands that I didn't know existed because of this feature. It also will tell you which browsers support the given command.

Hope it works out for you. If you need any help after you download it just ask.

I've had many troubles with godaddy - I recommend 1and1.com or dreamhost.com - they both rock.
