Default Is it a good idea to run a separate domain as a sub domain?
Hi ladies!

I am getting ready to purchase a second domain and wanted to run it as a sub domain so that I won't incur an extra hosting fee. My question is, is it going to hurt the domain to do it that way.

The other question is that if I do that, do you have any good resources for how to set that up? I've never tried it before.

Serita,

If your site is not super huge or traffic is ridiculous then it should not hurt you at all.

Your hosting company should be able to help you set up the second domain site. It is usually very simple and if you have cPanel can be done through there. It is no more complicated than setting up a sub-domain.

Serita, are you sure you don't mean addon domain? I have a lot of addon domains, but don't do sub domains except for forums or a separate blog. I want my other sites to have their own URL, therefore the addon domains. All I pay for is for registering the new domain name.

Here's a short description of parked, addon, and sub domains:

Sub domain
  • Lets say your domain is mysite.com.
  • You install a forum and put in in a directory called mysite.com/forum/.
  • You can turn the directory board into a sub-domain by adding it as a sub-domain from your Control Panel.
  • Now you can access your Message board as either mysite.com/forum OR forum.mysite.com.
  • This costs you nothing - no registering of a new domain name or hosting.
Parked domain
  • You have two domains mysite.com and mysite2.com.
  • mysite.com is the domain of your website and you want to add mysite2.com.
  • You want them both to go to the same place. In other words, when someone types either www.mysite.com or www.mysite2.com they will go to the same page(s) on your website.
  • In order to have additional parked domains you need to purchase them from a registry or your current host.
Addon domain
  • You have two domains mysite.com and mysite2.com.
  • You want the two domains to be totally separate and independent websites.
  • Your new addon domain will have its own folder in your hosting provider's root directory.
  • In order to have addon domains you need to purchase and register them. The cost can run from $5 and up. Mine usually cost me $10 per domain registration through my host.
HTH a bit,
