That's what I thought about but I thought I needed to put virtual assistant or va in there somewhere...so thanks!

Angelica, I urge you to use caution when sharing a possible name or domain here or on any forum. Unfortunately people will see a good idea and do something with it before you get to.

As with the others, I encourage you to think about your business name and get a domain that would go well with it.

You don't have to have a business name you know. You could go with your own name. And with a name like Angelica there's all sorts of possibilities that could go with that.

www.godaddy.com is a good source for purchasing domain names and they provide webhosting too. And since you are so new to all of this, probably would be good for you to get someone to assist you - there are any number of us here who have done our own sites or have good knowledge of what to do with them.

An alternative might be to set up a blogsite at www.blogger.com which is free hosted and then just get your domain name forwarded to your blogsite once it's up. If that doesn't make sense just think about when you shift house and get the post office to forward your mail - it's a similar thing but on the web. And you don't need to know coding or anything - you can just pick out one of their templates to start with. You also don't have to have a domain to start with. You can choose a username so that your address would be like this: http://username.blogspot.com and you can use that till you've settled on a business name and domain address.

Hope this helps - feel free to contact me if you need to know more. Or ask questions here.

I was just popping back in to post a word or warning about discussing your business name directly in a public forum for the same reason Kathie mentioned - she's so right and it is something to consider.

Reading through the rest of the thread I realized it may have been my fault you thought you have to have VA or Virtual Assistant in your domain or business name and that's not the case at all! That was just an example and by no means intended to limit you in your choices.

I really like Kathie's suggestion of using your name and agree that there are a lot of neat branding options built right in to that one.

When you do decide, please post back and share with us [after you've already bought it! ]

Angelica, you got sage advice from Kathie and Tess here. To second their thoughts, I'll tell you a little about my progress. My biz name is Virtual Writing & Communications, domain name writingVA.com. But wherever I create an account, it's under my name, 'maryhruth.' I figure that's just fine, because as a sole proprietor, my personality is my brand.

Domains are purchased for 1 year but you can increase that to 2 years or more.

Webhosting is a different matter and can be paid for monthly or annually. Then there's mailhosting for email addresses, etc. But if you want just the domain name because you're pointing it to somewhere else or hosting a site elsewhere then you don't need to buy anything else, just the domain name.

When you purchase a domain name do you just have it for a year? What happens if you don't renew? I purchased a domain name once and didn't use it, but the skeleton site I put up stayed up for a long time. I finally asked for it to be taken down. I guess I thought it would just expire.

Yes, it should expire. Usually the domain name is put in a 'grace' pattern that allows you to renew it for about 3 months after its expired but after that made publicly available again. Very unusual for the site still to be showing under that domain if it has expired.
