Default Client Website - Hosting & Domain Question
Good Morning,

Forgive me if this question is answered elsewhere. I searched for a while and couldn't quite find the exact answer I need.

For those of you that design websites for your clients and are NOT resellers, how do you handle the domain registration and hosting? I have a request to design a simple 5-6 page website but I'm stumped on how to get him up and running with his hosting.

Do you have your client set up the domain name and hosting with a company of their choice? If they don't want the hassle, do you set it up and provide them with all the access info once the site is up and running?

Thank you so much for your help!

I've set up domains and webhosting for clients. They give me their credit card info, I set it up, get the name servers pointed to the right place and put up a coming soon page and then send them the information. I just charge them for the time I spend on it.

I'm not a re-seller of any service; I think it's a conflict of interest for a VA to be a re-seller of services they sign their clients up for.

Julia,

Thanks for your super-fast reply. That's the way I was leaning -- I've done it that way with family and friends in the past.

Do you usually sign your clients up for a year of hosting/domain registration or let them choose the duration (i.e., month to month or more than a year).

I've signed them up for a year; it's less expensive for them that way.

Hi there,

I actually subcontract my web design services and of course clients are advised of that from day 1 that I speak to them. I give them my advice on hosting companies and tell them what the top 3 that I recommend. My top 3 I have joined as affiliates to earn some passive income and of course I advise them of that also. I like my clients to know everything up front and don't keep anything from them. I try my best to help them save money by offering them extrodinary prices and get them to do as much leg work as possible to save them money. I tell them to sign up themselves with the company of there choice and email me the hosting information. If my clients would prefer me to do it for them than I have no problem with that either. However my higher paying and more estalbished in buiness or finances clients I will handle a little different but will always stick to my TELL ALL rule which means always tell the truth. All my clients are well aware when they come to me for business that I am a multi busienss service and va business.

I hope what I said made sense and answered your questions.

Hi there,

How do you actually do this?

Do you have to buy a domain name and host with the same company? Can someone please explain me more in depth this as I am interested in getting a domain name with a company but I want to use the templates to create my website with another company. Are there usually charges involve?
