I use the new business listings in the local business journal. I also have a large file of business cards, lists, etc. of people I've met over the last several years. I'm just not starting to pull together my spreadsheet so I can get some postcards mailing this month.

I think that postcards tend to work because they offer no effort opening and if they are even just lying around they are advertising. Flyers while nice are only effective if opened/posted somewhere. When you send a letter there is no guarantee that the recipient will open your mail. That is part of the beauty of the email as well it is already open and doing at least 50% more work that a traditional letter/flyer mailer. IMHO

I launched an import jewelry business in 2004 and used postcards for two trunk shows. I had them professionally but inexpensively done. Folks came to the sales in droves and some people still call my business number and shop from my website with that FIRST postcard, 5 years later! Folks loved the photo and have it saved somewhere to reference. I am a big fan of postcards. I used Modern Postcards back then. They are a little pricier now.

I have designed a mailout to be sent out, however I have also sent an email to all my friends advising of my VA business and asking them to keep their ears and eyes open for anyone that would require my assistance. it is amazing to realise just how many opportunities there are out there, from people you know in your everyday life. one of my friends even offered to put my business name forward at her work as she is in the human resources field, and agrees it would be cheaper for her company than hiring a temp!! (Fingers crossed). In regards to the mail out, I am going to take my time with this, as I want to make sure i get it right! Thanks again

I always hand-address my mailings -- peaks curiosity!

Old fashion postcard placed in a dropbox works and so does obtaining your target list from your local phone book.
