Default Direct Mailing--Mail Now or wait til Monday?
Hello Everyone,

I have a direct mailing all set and ready to go. I was going to drop mailing off at the post office today, then I had a thought with this being a holiday weekend and all, should I wait until Monday? Will my mail get lost in the shuffle when everyone comes back to work on Monday? What do you think?

Thanks!

I know there is extensive research into when to send emails as far as the day of the week and even the time of day. I think I would wait simply because there may be a lot of people out this week before Easter (spring break time in the US - half my department in JOBLAND is gone!) and, you are right, there may be some "pile up". Mail is a little harder to predict though because you never know exactly how long it will take an item to get to the destination. If you are sending farther than local Saturday may be enough so folks get it Tuesday. Where I am local can be as quick as next day if you send from down town and it is only going down town.

Yes, this the mailing is mostly local this time around. I may just wait until Saturday or Monday even.

By the way, Sundi, I love your Peep avatar.

If I had to make this decision for my own practice I would definitely wait until after the holiday and send them out on Monday.

Since I don't have personal experience with this kind of marketing I found a few articles that might help you with this campaign or a future one:

Top 10 Direct Mail Mistakes

Direct Mail Basics

(They specify in another article that 'direct mail' refers to a bought mailing list, but I think the same general concepts apply across the board for your existing mailing list as well in most cases)

Hi

I would definitely hold off. A lot of businesses will be taking Friday off too for Good Friday. It would be best to target the mail not the day they go back but perhaps a day or so later too. Everyone is in that relaxed mode and catch up mode and anything new really doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I know I normally don't even send out press releases during this time.

What has always worked best for me and I know it probably differs for everyone, but I usually try the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday plan. Monday everyone is into getting back into the work mode and Friday everyone just wants the weekend.

Of course, if you had a holiday special that would be different, but if not, I'd wait.

Thanks!

Thank you everyone! Everything you had said made absolute sense. Now, it just gives me some more time perhaps to make a few more mailings to add in with the bunch. I am trying to keep it relatively small though and target specific businesses. This way I can be sure to follow-up with each of them.

Again, thank you!

Yes, I would wait until Monday to mail out. Here in Canada the mail won't even get picked up in the mailboxes until Monday - by coincidence, I'm also getting a mailing out as well this weekend. I'm taking my time and printing and stuffing and then get it out in Monday's mail.

I think marketing mail arriving on Monday or Tuesday after a long weekend may just get put in File 13 while people deal with the "important" mail.
