Default Services question
I was just wondering if clients ask you to produce a newsletter, for example, do they give you a draft of what they want and just expect you to design the layout and type it up etc, or do they expect you to word things for them too?

I am asking because although my admin skills are good, my copywriting skills are not great. So I am happy to offer certain services (ie, newsletter design, powerpoint presentations) but wouldn't necessarily want to write the copy.

I am using newsletters as and example but this applies to any job really.

So if you advertised services such as 'newsletters' or 'powerpoint presentations' do clients automatically assume that you create these from scratch and do all the copy yourself too?

I hope I have made myself clear!

Thanks

Lynda

Lynda,

It would depend on how you have your packages or services figured. If one of my clients want copy then I charge an extra fee because that is something that I sub out. Same with presentations although most time on PPT presentations my clients just need to make them appealing and edit out excessive copy and materials.

So if I listed in my services (for example):

Newsletters
Powerpoint presentations

Would you suggest a note at the bottom saying something like - 'If you require copy to be written, then extra fees may apply'?

Or would this come under your normal fees anyway as it would just add more time to the job?

Or, if I am not happy about writing copy at all, would it be best to put a note at the bottom saying something like - 'Copy is not supplied'?

Or am I just sweating the small stuff and just leave it and discuss this with clients as and when it is appropriate?

Sorry, if it seems like I am being picky but I don't want to mislead anyone!!

Thanks

If you do not list prices then you can mention in your initial consultation. Or you can make a note - If you require copy to be written, then extra fees may apply.

Most clients assume they provide the copy however there are some who will not so you may want to make that clear up front. Also, others will provide copy but may want you to review for spelling and grammar. Light edits are part of my package.

Thanks Lee.

That's very helpful.
I would prefer to put prices on my site (it always switches me off when I can't find prices on a website - this is one of the main things I look for, but maybe that's just me!) and NOT offer copywriting.

As an indexer, I am more than happy to check for spelling/grammar etc.

I agree, I also like to see prices on websites that I visit. When I don't, I just continue to another site. BTW, your site looks great so far. Keep up the good work!

I agree - prices are generally one of the first things people look for (myself included) and I think it shows you are open and transparent and new clients have more confidence using you.
