Default Service Descriptors
I'm working on the services I provide and I was wondering if there's a list somewhere of service descriptors (services that are provided and what that particular service is). Or maybe we can compile one here.

I know what I want to say but the words, etc. are not coming to me.

Just going off of my resume and what I do now here's what I can do with my eyes closed...

oversee daily business operations
provide critical support (executive assistant)
prepared documents
registrar
create and maintain files
collect and maintain payment records
customer service/support
transcription

So now how can I put all of that together to market myself efficiently and effectively

Hi Nekola,

First I would suggest you define who your target market is going to be. Who will you be working with..attorney, real estate, ecommerce...who is your ideal customer?

Once you have determined this, you then decide what 'oversee daily operations' for that customer will entail.

So if you are working with a real estate agent, what portion of their business will you oversee? Will you offer transaction coordination or just help to promote real estate ads, create flyers and so on.

That's how you determine what your services will be.

Decide on the customer and then determine what services you can offer to help them with their business. You provide the solution to their problems.

Some of the items you listed can be applied to various customers. Some of your descriptions are too broad...such as create and maintain files. Most clients can do that themselves.

Collect and maintain payment records sounds like accounting. Will you offer accounting services? If so, what software will you use? Decide who you can offer this service to and then break that down to provide solutions.

Nekola, I agree with Janine. You have to pinpoint what services you provide - what you will, and won't, do for a client. Your services have to be specific to your knowledge, experience and expertise.

Think of it from a client's perspective, the WIIFM (what's in it for me) factor. What kind of documents do you prepare? Are you a whiz at Word but not so great at PowerPoint? Can you create charts and pivot tables? Will you handle customer service calls for a client who has customers calling all day? Do you only want to respond to customer e-mail inquiries?

Some of the best research you can do will be to visit other VA's websites and see how they present themselves and their services. You will be amazed at the numerous differences and ingenious approaches you'll find. It will also trigger your thoughts about what you want to offer, what you have no desire to do, and how best to showcase your services.

Best of luck with your research, your planning, and getting your business off the ground!

Nekola,

Take each of the service that you want to offer and figure out how it will help potential clients. Either use a short paragraph or bullet the service that are included. For example:

"collect and maintain payment records"
Accounts receivable and invoicing. We will maintain your customer records and billing base. By allowing us to invoice and collect on payment, you will not have to worry about old debts from clients again.... or

Accounts receivable and invoicing
* Invoice clients
*Apply payments and update records
*Collections and follow-up on 30+ days
*Etc., etc.
