Thanks for the info...I am a notary public and plan on offering it to established clients only. In Georgia I believe I can only charge like $2 for the service. I will look into the travel part and see if I can charge more.

You just answered my question. I knew there were specific state rates you could charge for being a notary, but was wondering if you could have the separate service for mobile fees. Don't see where it would hurt to offer it though.

Thanks,

I am thinking about beginning to market my mobile notary service to title companies. Do you have any marketing ideas that would be helpful. Thanks

I have been thinking of adding notary services to my packages. However, I'm not quite sure where I should be going to get started...research what steps I need to take. Do any of you have any thoughts that could point me in the right direction?

Is anyone here a Certified Notary Signing Agent? I noticed that many of you do loan closings, but, at least from what I can tell, you have to be a certified signing agent to do so? Is that true or am I able to do loan closing just by being a notary public?

I'm considering taking this Signing Agent training course with the National Notary Association and was wondering if anyone else had done it.

Hi Paulette! If you live in New York State you do not need to be a signing agent for mortgages and loans. I'm not sure if NYC is different, but I don't think so. Here is the link to the NYS Department of Licensing - http://www.dos.state.ny.us/licensing/notary/notary.html.

I hope this helps answer your question!

Do you think the training course would be beneficial though? I've never notarized any closing papers so I have no idea if there are additional steps that I need to take, mostly to protect myself from any liability.

I do think it would be beneficial if you have never done the work before. I would also look for a local class before taking the online class. It seems a little expensive to me. I took a basic Notary class through Knowledge Network in Albany and it was only about $75. I just looked on their website and the Signing Agent class is only $45.

Good luck!

So glad I joined this forum. This has been absolutely informative. I was also thinking of adding mobile notary service and was thinking if it was worth it. When I called the NAA they said that you can partner with business such as banks etc and be under contract to work with them as the notary public.

I was thinking if I do offer this, I would try and partner with local businesses and community organizations. Also I have to see if its something my particular niche is in need of. If I find it is to much of a hassle or work then I would not do it. In the end if it doesn't prove profitable it doesn't make sense.

This is a great topic to discuss. I have been considering becoming a notary, but must ask myself if I want my day to be interrupted with notary calls. I tend to become less productive the more interruptions that I have going on.

My Notary license expired too. My plans are to reinstate it and offer the service in my business. I think of it as an added convenience I can offer to my local clients. Here in TX we can get around the flat fee schedule by 'including' it into our service fee (our time) and travel expenses.
Tonya: I have read in different areas here on VAF that many VA's screen their calls by letting it go to voicemail to avoid these interruptions. Some have added that they include in the announcement how often they check there voicemail and/or how soon they will get back with the inquiring party. I love this idea and keeps me 'in control' of my own business and more importantly, it keeps me on track with the project I may be working on. Something to think about?

I was reading the National Notary Website which allows me to search my state information. In my state (Texas) these are the allowable fees according to www.texasnotary.com FAQ's page:

Q How much can I charge?
A Although notary fees are optional, Texas law sets the maximum fees that notaries may charge for their services. Notaries are also required to post their fees for the public, and you should give a written itemized invoice for your notarial services. Here is a list of allowable fees for the most common notarial services.
*Taking acknowledgments or proofs for the first signature $6.00 ; for each additional signature $1.00
*Administering oath or affirmation $6.00
*Swearing a witness for a deposition $6.00
*Taking a deposition of a witness (for each 100 words) $ .50
*Certifying a photocopy $6.00
*Providing an uncertified copy of an entry from a notary’s record book (per page) $ .50
The allowable fees seem quite low to me. Doesn't make sense, but I as you, haven't researched it enough. I'll have to study some more. Maybe I'm missing something.

You have a great idea about the elderly. Yes, there is so much to think about. I'm sure we'll get it worked out.

Good luck to you!
Dana
I never thought about being a "mobile notary" but it seems quite "do-able" and the price list was very helpful. Definitely going to research some more and see if it's worth it!
