Default Legal Support
I was approched by a group of business owners who provide services to attorneys. They asked me if I would like to join the group by providing VA services. I have not worked in this area before, but I spoke to my Pastor who has worked for attorneys for years and he thought it was a good idea.

Within days of speaking to him he has formed a team of legal support individuals eg. paralegal, legal assistant, etc. He created the team so I could go back to the group and advise them that I have the resources to handle the work.

What are thoughts? What are the advantages and/or dis-advantages.

Thanks in advance for your help?

The biggest awareness of working with attorneys from my perspective is that you have to be HIGHLY detail-oriented and be aware of high pressure deadlines. I ran two separate law offices (immigration office - 3 attnys/1 paralegal/1 file clerk/me and DUI/Criminal office - 1 attorney/me) and found that I really like working with attorneys. They tend to be logical and straight forward with their employees. I have narrowed my primary niche market down to attorneys once again after having focused on all solo-preneur/entrepreneur markets.

I agree with Lily. Go through your own checklist of how you work with others and if you can handle rush jobs, taking instructions, following instructions etc. You want to be as detailed oriented as possible. I, like Lily, enjoy working with strong personalities, which lawyers tend to have. People who know what they want and don't beat around the bush, so to speak.

After working with lawyers (that's what they're called here in Canada) for over 30 years I find they are all different, just like the rest of the human race. Some are organized and on the ball, direct and provide good instructions, some are totally scattered, live in a nightmare mess, don't return client phone calls and don't pay any operating bills without being banged over the head.

I have worked with 3 (male) solos over the years and all 3 were playing with the trust money. It made no difference to me but, as I have very strong ethics, I did not want to work with them and eventually (discreetly and professionally, like it was their idea) let them go on their way.

Every lawyer is different, as is every human being. A few years ago (on the job) I vowed I would never work with a female lawyer again as, nice though they may be outside, in the large law firms they were nasty, demanding, demeaning micro managers. Maybe its something about the pressure for billable hours and the "glass ceiling".

That said, recently arrived in my new city, I've been retained by a solo lady lawyer who recently married and moved here and is just getting her practice off the ground and she is an absolute delight - I'm really looking forward to working for her.

My point I guess is that each and every client is different, whatever field they are in.

Lynne
