Operator Digital Transcription
Hi Guys!

I'm a VA newbie and in the process of just getting things together before fully launching my new business venture.

I am an experienced Legal Secretary and much of my work involves audio typing, however the Firm which I work for still use the mini tape system.

Obviously it will so much more convienant for me to transcribe digitally via the internet. This is something I've not done before. I have a standard computer so I have Windows Media Player. Please can you tell what type of digital audio files format I would be able to receive. I'm guessing MP3 will be OK but what others play on WMP?

Also is there any software you suggest I download that will help?

Any and all suggestions will be gratefully received!

Many thanks!

Avocet

Express Scribe transcription software. It plays multiple audio formats. You can control it with the F keys or with a foot pedal. It has start, stop, rewind, fast forward, slow, and speed up functions. You can do minor audio manipulation, such as a volume boost or background noise reduction.

And it's free.

Has anyone used the play with pausing function? If so, what's your opinion?

I do agree using express scribe so far it is by far the best playback software, plus it is free... however, there are times when the voice file could not be read by scribes codec (ex. .dss and the likes) and so be ready to download switch also with NcH express scribe also a freeware. you could convert audiofiles here... but then again some files could not be converted or at times are cut dictations (cant hear the rest of the dictation--thinking it's done but not really) I use wav pedal

Thank you for posting this. I am interested in going back to transcription also. I used the old tape system years ago so I need to get up to speed with digital transcription. Looks like everyone is recommending Express Scribe so I think I will try that.

Yup. Express Scribe. I use this daily with an attorney I work with. What is nice about it is that you don't have to have a foot pedal. You can use your keyboard to start, stop and so on. Very easy to use.

I use Express Scribe for transcription projects all the time. I've also used the NCH software for light audio editing.

I think there are some other options available too. I just found this one best suits my needs.

Hope this helps.

Deana, like you I downloaded it yesterday based on everyone's recommendations. A short welcome message comes on it, and I used that to try it out - and probably will again.

When Express Scribe downloaded, it also let me download a trial of Express Dictate, which I'd like to use to dictate something to practice transcribing; however I need to get a microphone first. If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks Gladys! There were several places to download on their site so I think where I downloaded it did not give me the trial of Express Dictate. I will go back and get it and I guess order thew microphone next. I am a newbie and i love this forum!!
