Hi ladies (and gents)

I would like to get a new laptop the one I have is too slow and I cannot use it effectively for work. My desktop is great and I love it but I need to be a bit more mobile as my son is zooming around the house in his walker and I can not be locked away in the office.

Anyway, my current desktop is a Dell XPS system and I love it, fast, lots of memory, no problems (so far) it runs Windows Vista. I am looking for a similar solution in a laptop as well. I was on Dells site and they are running some specials for back to school that end on Thursday so it looks like I have to make a decision fairly quickly.

I was looking at the Dell Studio 17 ($1700)and the Dell XPS M1730 ($2500)

The XPS has Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache) and NVIDIA®SLI™Dual GeForce®8700MGT with 512MB GDDR3 Memory Video Card

The Studio has Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz/800Mhz FSB/6MB cache) and 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 3650 Video Card

Does anyone have either of these systems? Do you recommend or not recommend them?

both have 4GB of RAM and 250GB hard drive

What else do I need? What do I need to look for?
What do you recommend? Your opinions are priceless.

Hi Kim -

I dont have either one of the systems you listed above. I do have a Dell Inspiron laptop with Windows Vista, and I am not impressed at all. However, I do have Vista on my desktop and love it. So I think its just one of those things....what works well for one may not the other.


that info probably wasnt much help...but Im facing the same issue and thought I would give you my 2cents worth

I am actually trying to replace an Inspirion laptop as well.

The sale ends today so I guess I will have to make a decision shortly. I will keep you posted.

I'm not happy with my Inspiron either, but my husband has a Dell desktop which is fantastic. I think it's important to select what they call a "business" computer and not a "home" computer - even though the specs may be similar, there seems to be a difference in performance.

So far, I have not had a problem. It is rather larger than the average laptop because it includes the numbered key pad on the right side of the keyboard. I also purchased the extended pro end-user support because I am not that computer saavy when it comes to operating on the machine.

I know you may have purchased already but I hope this helps.

I had a Dell for a while and the screen went black after 6 months of use. Since that time, I've had an Acer that did really well until my dh installed Vista on it (it was an XP). Now, I have an hp that I LOVE!! It also runs Vista (which I hate), but nothing I can do about it.

I know I'm a few days late on this, but hope you love whatever you got!!

Thanks for your responses, I have not made a purchase yet, I was feeling a bit to rushed so I have held off for now until I can do a little more research.

I'll let you know what I end up getting until then all responses are greatly appreciated.
