Default MAC -- Which One?
Ok, I have been wanting to get a Mac for some time now and I just found out I can get a pretty good discount on one being that I am a college student...they are also running a promotion where students who buy a Mac also get a free IPOD with their purchase. So, now is a pretty good time to possibly get one

So...my question is for all the Mac Users...which one is best? These are my choices:

MacBook

MacBook Air

MacBook Pro

iMac

Mac Mini

My main purpose will be editing audio and video files. I look forward to hearing your input.

Darlene I have a MacBook Pro and I use it with the wireless keyboard and mouse and a 24inch Dell monitor. I've set it up so I have dual monitors. Having said that, with my external office now, I pack up my laptop and bring it home with me each day which is handy on nights like tonight where my hubby has all his friends over watching the state of origin (Go NSW!!!!!!!!!!!).

Think about if you need a laptop or not and if you don't I'd go for the beefiest one you can afford. I'm going to buy an iMac when I can afford it (I have a total of 6 computers on my home and office network - am I being greedy???).

I was looking over all of these at an Apple Store couple weeks ago. I think I'd be going with MacPro but I'm not 100% sure yet. I plan on purchasing one of these sometimes by the fall.

MacBook Air is so thin and I'm so amazed by it. But the only drawback is that it only has 1.6 GB while I want more than that.

I like MacBook but I sort of want a bigger screen so was thinking more toward MacPro but it would cost a lot more. So I'm still debating.

Darlene,
I'm glad there are some Mac Users on here that could help you. I haven't used a Mac in about 10 years. I wish I had the time, patience and money to learn them all over again.

Let us know what you end up buying and perhaps why you chose that one.

I would say forget about the MacBook Air. Unless you are a travelling businessman who needs to world's slimmest and most portable laptop, It simply doesn't have the power you need. Its designed for portability only.

Since you say you will be doing mainly audio and video editing, I would suggest an iMac. 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive. There is also an option for a 3.2 GHz. When dealing with A/V, get as much power as possible...a desktop usually provides more. That's why I suggest the iMac.

However, if you need portability also, consider nothing less than the MacBook Pro.

I have both a high end Dell and MacBook Pro! I'm and avid video and audio technician and I have to tell you, get the MacBook PRO. This is the only computer that you will be able to use to do the highend graphic/video/audio productions. It handles Final Cut without a glitch! You will love it. The MacBook PRO had the higher end graphics card and megs of ram to handle the rendering needed for you productions.

My High end Dell does the job but I got the Laptop of MacBook Pro and love it. It is portable so I can do the work and get it done where ever I am.

Hope this helps,
Lisa

I have an iMac and like it - if you don't need to travel or use it remotely, the desktop is probably a good choice.

Hi Darlene,

Being a MacBook Pro and MacBook Air user, I would recommend you go for the MacBook Pro for work. The Air is a fantastic, but generally as a lighter version of the Pro that you want to carry everywhere with you. It is certainly not a desktop replacement option, unless you want to clutter your desktop with a USB hub, external super drive etc.

Hope this helps.

I just love my IMAC. I bought it last April.

It has a 2 Gig Processor with an Intel Core; 1 Gig of Memory but you can always get more. It's recommended if you're a big audio video user/editor.

From what I understand, the desktop is better for editing your audio/video programs. I have a friend who teaches Graphics and they were recommended for his classrooms.

Go for it!! You'll love the results.

Darlene, I have been wavering for a long time about bringing a Mac into the equation and was wondering what you decided to buy and how you like it?
