Default Lease or purchase new laptop?
Hi.
I really need a much smaller (and newer and more reliable) laptop. Someone suggested I lease one for tax purposes (more cost overall, but less per month vs depreciation).

Anyone had any experiences (good and bad) when leasing a computer?

Thanks

Julie

I've never considered leasing a laptop and don't think that's a direction I would go - I just don't think it makes sense to create a situation where you're paying more for something than necessary. I'll be curious to find out what you decide to do...

As a business owner, I always look at my numbers over a length of time. I agree with Tess about paying more for something than necessary. With a purchased laptop, you have the freedom to alter software, system components, etc. to suit your needs. I would think that leasing a machine would impose limitations. I, too, am curious to see what you decide is best for you.

Best wishes!

I would probably just buy, then you get to keep the laptop for a duration. Even if you end up needing to replace in a few years because its not as powerful as it needs to be, it can still be of use. You would be surprised how often you can use a low powered older laptop for things in a pinch.

I would not lease one either. I would also check with your accountant because there is a threshold where you can take a one time deduction as opposed to depreciating the asset.
