Default Laptop or PC
I am so bummed! My laptop (I've had since 2005) is sadly going on the fritz. I have a PC I can use if I have to. All my stuff is on the laptop so I can transfer while it is still living. I can't afford to purchase a new laptop so I will be forced to switch. I love the flexibility of a laptop. Although I don't take it on the road I like the idea that I can if I have to.

What do you work on most? PC or laptop? Which do you favor?

I have both but prefer the keyboard on the desktop and the freedom of the laptop! I use a usb keyboard so if I'm at home I take the laptop wherever I feel like working, but it on a small table, and use the keyboard on my lap. Not the most efficient way of doing things, though! LOL

If I had to choose one or the other, I would probably stick to the desktop as I'm less likely to drop it.

I definitely prefer my laptop. I am not really a "sit up straight at a desk" kind of worker. I like being able to lounge around on the couch with my laptop. I also like the portability of being in whatever room of the house I want, or even taking my laptop elsewhere. I like to be where my computer is, and I like to be where the people are, so with my laptop I can move whenever needed.

I do miss having a number key pad. I never learned how to touch type the numbers along the top of the keyboard, and the ones on my keyboard I can access with the function key aren't lined up right, so I can't touch type those either. If I need to do a lot of number entering I'll buy a usb number pad and attach it up when I need it.

Shame, I can imagine how irritating and frustrating that must be.

I have both and depending on what I'm doing depends on what I prefer to use. On those days when I'm snowed under with work then working at my desktop is far better for me as I prefer the keyboard. I love the portability of a laptop though so wouldn't want to be without one.

I've recently had a similar experience. One of the upgrades performed by XP caused my desktop to stop playing sound files so I was forced to use my laptop while solving the problem. Which ultimately consisted of uninstalling a bunch of updates and reinstalling the driver that did work!

I have both but am attached to the hip on my laptop. I love the portability especially since we travel. Like the others I work in whichever room (including outside) fits my whim for the day. I have an HP and it has a larger keyboard and side number pad so it is no different than working on a traditional keyboard.

Hope that you can replace the laptop soon. With the holidays approaching look out for the great deals. I am also thinking with the release of Windows 7 in October you may find some great deals then too.

I think it is a matter of what is easier and convenient for you to use. Only you know how you are most comfortable when working. Since you have had your computer since 2005, you probably are ready to update to a newer computer to take advantage of a larger hard drive and more RAM memory. I currently use a desktop because I love the larger keyboard. It is also more comfortable for me to use than a laptop keyboard. I will be upgrading to a laptop but will use my desktop as my backup.

In my opinion having both is better. In the beginning I only had my laptop but felt the need for a pc for what I wanted to do but I could not afford it. So I decided to get a T-external memory, just in case the laptop died on me. Later on I was able to get a very good pc, but now my laptop is kinda, getting there lol
So it is great that you are backing up all your info; that is always the most important thing as technology unfortunately, sometimes just fails on us. I think getting the external drive was a great investment because not only is my information protected, but also, I can provide better and faster service in my already fast pc.
But definitely having both is best for your business, in my opinion. You can have your work at home computer and if you would like to personalize it more, you take your laptop to a coffee meeting and provide information about your services with a presentation. And you don't have to worry about you information because it is already protect in your external drive. Hope this helps.

I have two laptops. One is my mac and it is truly the laptop and i can be on it inside or outside my house. My PC laptop is docked and hooked up to monitor, keyboard and mouse in my office. And I have the flexibility to take the PC laptop with me if I need to instead of the mac. I had to have a pc as there is an estimating program I work in that mac does not support. Did not want parallels on my mac. A desktop model that was wireless was several hundred dollars more than I had to spend but I think this is going to work out even better....

I need the portability of my laptop. I do have a few clients on island that require in person meetings and it helps tremendously to be able to bring my files with me. Best of luck in your decisions.
