Default Getting started
Hello everyone,
i'm just getting started & have designed my website, got my business cards & some great (& hopefully successful) postcards to mail out to local businesses who i'm targetting initially.

I have a relatively new Dell PC desktop which is good but I think I would be better investing in a laptop that I can use purely for work purposes & wondered what everyone else thinks.

I would also really appreciate any advice as to what you use for back-up & whether you use password protection for each client & how this works.

Apologies for all the questions but you've been such a supportive, friendly, forum & a fountain of knowledge i'd rather ask than make mistakes.

Thanking in advance for your help
Sarah

Hi Anna,

Not very long but it is very basic. I bought a package including hosting to get me going. I figure I can always improve on it in the future & it's been fairly easy to use as i've used one of the templates given.

Good luck with your business.

Thanks for the response. Any suggestions for some inexpensive packages that include hosting.

Thanks,
Anna

Hi Anna, I got mine from Ebay, a company called Web Services Group. Very pleased with them.

I highly recommend checking out the sections of the forum, "Website & Graphic Design" and "General Website Development." There are many very good posts in there about setting up your website, buying your domain and finding a host.

I would agree with that. There are so many experienced people on this wonderful forum that are much better informed than myself.

Hi Sarah
Congrats on all the progress you've made!

I love having a laptop to work on - it allows so much more freedom; especially if you want to set up a wireless connection in your house, want to work at a cafe once in a while, or travel as much as we do.

As to backup - I'm not sure what you mean about 'password protection' for clients but I can tell you that we have a great external hard drive that we back up *everything* on on a regular basis. And because we build, host and manage sites for clients we also have a backup system on our server. I don't burn much to disc any longer simply because the hard drive has proven to be such a reliable option. I do also have an online document library that I store various files, etc. in but I try to encourage my clients to purchase one of their own (it's something we built ourselves, so we know it's secure ) for storage of their files, etc. If you're going to go with an online file storage system make sure you do your homework first, I've read some really terrible reports on some of those sites.

I hope that helps a bit

Thanks Tess. Well my lap top is ordered so i've got to get some work now to pay for it.

I've got a free trial of Carbonite for back-up, has anyone tried it?
