I use two LCD monitors constantly at my 9-to-5. The one on the left on my desk is rotated so that it is in a 'portrait' orientation. I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who does a lot of reading (or even just to try!). To me it is a more natural layout for reading documents or writing. The only downside is that many LCDs don't have bases that allow you to easily rotate them. You can improvise if you are handy, however... My other monitor is in 'landscape' orientation, and is better suited to my email program or anything else that benefits from being wider.
Depending on the capabilities of the computer itself, we are sometimes able to add a second video connection for far cheaper than mentioned in the blog linked. But, that depends as I said.
If you want, you can add up to 9 monitors, last time I checked. Modern Linux distro seem to work better with adding multi-monitors too, nowadays.
If you are on Windows, Google DualMonitorTools. It's free software that lets you assign hotkeys to move around windows between the monitors quickly, and even stretch a program across both (or all monitors, if you have > 2).
Sorry for the long post...I just love dual monitors!
