Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
Greetings,
I am currently still using Office 2003. I have taken classes on 2007. What do you consider to be the most used and up-to-date wordprocessing software?
What is the most reasonable price security program would you recommend if you are not doing any on-line financial transactions?
What would be the most reasonble priced security program if you were doing on-line financial transactions?
Thanks for you thoughts.

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
Most of my clients have 2007 although a few have upgraded to 2010 I don't plan to. I like OpenOffice and often suggest it to clients who don't have the Microsoft Suite. It's free, open source, has great features and is compatible with Microsoft Office.
When you ask about security for transactions I think it depends on how you want to set it up and what kind of payment options you'll accept. PayPal is always a good start - it's easy to work with and they handle the security part of things. If you want to accept credit cards directly then you'll need an SSL certificate for your site and a payment gateway like Authorize.net. I'm not really clear on your last two questions though so not sure this is the info you are looking for...?

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
Sorry to kinda butt in here, but Tess, can you save an OpenOffice document as a Word file? I'm still running Office 2003, which is working fine, but if OpenOffice will allow this, I'd jump on it rather than updating Word. All my clients are running some version of Word from 2003 to 2010. If you can't save it that way, what happens "on the other end" when a client with Word gets the OpenOffice document?
Thanks, Tess!

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
I find that most businesses use Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007, although the newest version is 2010. In my opinion 2007 is definitely an adjustment because I find it harder to find certain functions, but it has many higher tech features that are useful.
If a client has a lower version, there is a free add-in that can be installed to open a higher version or you can save it as a lower version of Word if needed.
I use PayPal on my website and there are no monthly fees and the transaction fees are generally less than any other merchant services.

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
You can open "doc" and "docx" Word documents with OpenOffice. This link will give you information on how to do this. You can save as type " Word 97/2000/XP format" which the later Word versions should be able to read.

I think OpenOffice is an exceptional alternative to MS Office. I, too, recommend it to others quite frequently. It is completely compatible wit MS Office, and offers almost all of the same features. Best of all, it is open source.... its FREE!
You can get more information from the OpenOffice.org website.

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
I saw an ad for openoffice.org when I was doing some adobe updates to my computer today. I'm so glad I was able to find some reviews on here about it. I have Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 and I only have the basic necessities - Word, PPT, Excel, and Outlook, so being able to get access to some of the others that are compatible with Microsoft, is great.
I'm going to download it now in fact.

Re: Computer Software & Programs-Staying on Track
I'm having no luck with downloading openoffice.org. I've tried 3 different times and it looks like it's doing something and then it's no where on my computer. This last time it took almost an hour and then there was nothing. I'm frustrated with it ! But, I'm going to try again. The instructions say something about using a mirror site, but that was taking me to root directories or something. I'm off to try again, but just needed to vent...lol.
