Default Computer or Server
I have been working with computers since the early 80's (pre internet). In my home office, I have two (2) desktops and (2) laptop. Sometime I need info which is one another computer, so I get a flash drive and download, and take the flash to the other computer, which also interrupts my creative process. If anyone in this forum is an IT professional, I would like to know should I investing in a server. My client base is increasing.

My need is to retrieving my info easy and fast. Any comment will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Phyllis, it sounds to me like you need a nice, big [in GB, not in physical size] external hard drive - not a server... Check NewEgg.com for a few good options. I think you can expect to spend about $200 for a decently sized model of good quality.

Post back if you need help choosing one - we have a couple

I'm not an IT professional, but I do believe you can set up just about any pc to act as a server. Short of that, have you considered networking your pcs and storing the files in question in a 'public' folder, accessible from any of them? Just a thought!

I also use Windows Live Sync which allows me to access select files from any computer with an internet access. It has been wonderful.

I agree in setting up a PC to serve as a 'server'. We just purchased two computers on eBay to replace the servers we have in the office. Why? Because they make me go nuts! They occupy a lot of space and they make a loud noise. I can hear the buzzing sound even in my sleep! (big smile)

I also agree with Cindy about networking and having a public folder. This saved me lots of time spent looking for something and sharing.

Yep yep yep, thats what I was going to suggest. Network them so you can access files from each no matter what computer you are on.

I'm not sure how my husband did it but he networked our computers as well, without a server purchase. We have a shared folder that we can both access, mostly for family pics and stuff.

What about Google Docs? I have a Gmail acct and know it has that feature but not entirely sure what you can do with it.
