Default Starting my business
For various reasons, I must wait to officially "open" my business until sometime in the fall. However, I would like to try to get some small assignments in the meantime. Has anyone done this before obtaining a business license and becoming "official?" I don't want to do anything that I'm not supposed to do; yet, I feel as though I can be doing small assignments, which might lead to bigger assignments in the future.

I have. Actually for years prior to opening my business I did freelance work for several people. They were mostly one off projects or help while a business got caught up.

You could also consider sub-contracting your services while you work on opening your doors. This will give you some additional experiences and hopefully a few testimonials.

I am in the exact same postion as you are and was wondering if I could do the same thing. I think I may start will small projects informing others that I will open my business soon. Hopefully that will help in buliding clients.

Hi, it depends on your state and county laws regarding new business. Go to your state and county website to obtain this information.

Thanks for the responses! There are opportunities in my area to type research papers, theses and dissertations. I'm thinking of taking on those types of projects.

Hi. I too am in this situation, and am wondering where can you find these smaller projects and sub-contracting opportunities. I am looking on craigslist and forums etc. Thanks!!

If you live near a college or university, it is probably a perfect location for something like PreppyM is talking about. Otherwise, I suspect you have to just keep searching and pounding the pavement for that job.
