Re: Has anyone used Amazon's CreateSpace?
This is the response I received from CreateSpace regarding ISBNs for DVDs:
Your disc title will not have an ISBN (as that applies to books only) but will require a UPC code.
A complimentary Universal Product Code (UPC) is automatically assigned to every disc title set up through CreateSpace. This UPC remains the property of CreateSpace and may only be used for the discs we manufacture while you use our service.
What is a UPC?
UPCs are barcodes that were originally created to help grocery stores speed up the checkout process and keep better track of inventory, but the system quickly spread to all other retail products because it was so successful.
UPCs originate with a company called the GS1, formerly the Uniform Code Council (UCC). A manufacturer applies to the GS1 for permission to enter the UPC system. The manufacturer pays an annual fee for the privilege. In return, the GS1 issues the manufacturer a six-digit manufacturer identification number and provides guidelines on how to use it.
Why Does CreateSpace Use a UPC?
We use the unique UPC to assemble your discs during the manufacturing process as well as an identifier for your specific title.
Can I Use My Own UPC?
Yes, simply input your own UPC during the title setup process through your Member Account. If your UPC has been used for "replicated" versions of your title, you will not be able to use it for the "duplicated" versions CreateSpace will create for you. “Replicated” and “duplicated” discs are two different products, much like VHS versus DVDs. It's the same content, but uses different formats. If your UPC has been used for a replicated version, we are happy to assign a complimentary UPC for your title, or you may purchase a UPC specifically for the duplicated version of the title.
Can I Use an ISBN or EAN?
CreateSpace only accepts 12-digit UPCs for disc titles at this time.
Placement of the UPC on Your Artwork
If your artwork has an existing UPC and/or barcode, it must be removed before you submit the artwork to CreateSpace. For DVDs, our automated production system will superimpose UPCs in the upper right corner of the back cover. In addition, a small internal barcode (not a UPC) is superimposed on the bottom of the disc face. For CDs, our automated production system superimposes UPCs in the lower right corner of the outside tray insert and the lower right corner of the outside booklet insert. In addition, a small internal barcode (not a UPC) is superimposed on the bottom of the disc face. Please see the DVD and CD Artwork Guidelines section of the product pages on our site for the exact size and position of each UPC.
The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a 12-digit number that uniquely identifies your title and allows retailers to order and sell your [CHOOSE: CD / DVD]. You may use the UPC CreateSpace supplied for your title when it was set up. There is no additional charge for the UPC CreateSpace assigns your title. CreateSpace owns the UPC and it may only be used while you are using our service.
