Default Has anyone used Amazon's CreateSpace?
Hello,

I am interested in knowing if anyone could share their experiences with having used Amazon's CreateSpace. https://www.createspace.com/

I have a client who currently sells her DVDs on her website and wants to use CreateSpace so I am doing some research to see if it would be a good avenue for self-publishing.

She doesn't have an ISBN for the DVD but it appears she will need that. Any feedback on that?

Thanks,

Janine

I have used Createspace to self publish a book and found it an easy and effective process. Createspace provides an ISBN as part of the deal. What I appreciated was that there are several levels of service depending on your skill levels and budget so you can create the program you need to get the job done. Good luck!

Thank you, Holly for your comments.

I dug a little further and noticed that while CS does provide the ISBN they are the imprint of record which means that this ISBN cannot be used with any other publisher. I think in some cases it may be best to buy the ISBN outside of CS. Here's the text:

If you do not already own an ISBN, we can assign one to your book for free. Keep in mind that if you select this option, CreateSpace will be listed as the “imprint of record” through distribution channels, including on your Amazon.com detail page. The ISBN also belongs to CreateSpace and cannot be used with another publisher. Books registered with CreateSpace-assigned ISBNs will be listed onhttp://www.BooksinPrint.com within three weeks of becoming available.

If you'd like to list your book with your own Imprint Name, we also offer a Custom ISBN for $10, a Custom Universal ISBN for $99, or you can provide your own ISBN that you've purchased from Bowker or your national ISBN agency. You can learn more about these options here: https://www.createspace.com/Products/Book/ISBNs.jsp

I appreciate your feedback. I'm need to dig further to see if publishing a DVD is any different from publishing a book on CS.

Regards,

Janine

I think it is important you own the ISBN. I bought a block of 10 ISBNs a few years ago and have used about 6 of them now. I have used Createspace too and self-published a book there that still sells today on Amazon.com. It's a great service and easy to use and you can set up your own store at Createspace too and discount your book or give a special code to those you choose to purchase the book direct from Createspace. This is useful if you are co-authoring a book with others.

Hi Kathie,

Do you know if the ISBN number is required on Create Space for a DVD? My client is marketing a DVD and I can't find anything about a DVD on the site.

Thanks,

Janine

I really don't know. Do other DVDs have ISBNs? If so, then I would say yes. Can't say I've actually looked for that on a DVD.

I just sent and email to Create Space so I'l post back with a response.

So far I have read mixed reviews on the customer support. I think that
self-publishing is more work than people realize.

Thank you!
Janine

I agree that self-publishing takes a lot of work. I've written and published two books of my own and done two client's books too. Re the customer support, they've been generally good for me. I'm in Australia so I don't ring them but they do respond to my customer support requests.

I'll be interested to find out what info you get Janine. I have a client looking to move his self-published book to them and possibly add DVD's in the future.

Default Re: Has anyone used Amazon's CreateSpace?
This is the response I received from CreateSpace regarding ISBNs for DVDs:

Your disc title will not have an ISBN (as that applies to books only) but will require a UPC code.

A complimentary Universal Product Code (UPC) is automatically assigned to every disc title set up through CreateSpace. This UPC remains the property of CreateSpace and may only be used for the discs we manufacture while you use our service.

What is a UPC?
UPCs are barcodes that were originally created to help grocery stores speed up the checkout process and keep better track of inventory, but the system quickly spread to all other retail products because it was so successful.

UPCs originate with a company called the GS1, formerly the Uniform Code Council (UCC). A manufacturer applies to the GS1 for permission to enter the UPC system. The manufacturer pays an annual fee for the privilege. In return, the GS1 issues the manufacturer a six-digit manufacturer identification number and provides guidelines on how to use it.

Why Does CreateSpace Use a UPC?
We use the unique UPC to assemble your discs during the manufacturing process as well as an identifier for your specific title.

Can I Use My Own UPC?
Yes, simply input your own UPC during the title setup process through your Member Account. If your UPC has been used for "replicated" versions of your title, you will not be able to use it for the "duplicated" versions CreateSpace will create for you. “Replicated” and “duplicated” discs are two different products, much like VHS versus DVDs. It's the same content, but uses different formats. If your UPC has been used for a replicated version, we are happy to assign a complimentary UPC for your title, or you may purchase a UPC specifically for the duplicated version of the title.

Can I Use an ISBN or EAN?
CreateSpace only accepts 12-digit UPCs for disc titles at this time.

Placement of the UPC on Your Artwork
If your artwork has an existing UPC and/or barcode, it must be removed before you submit the artwork to CreateSpace. For DVDs, our automated production system will superimpose UPCs in the upper right corner of the back cover. In addition, a small internal barcode (not a UPC) is superimposed on the bottom of the disc face. For CDs, our automated production system superimposes UPCs in the lower right corner of the outside tray insert and the lower right corner of the outside booklet insert. In addition, a small internal barcode (not a UPC) is superimposed on the bottom of the disc face. Please see the DVD and CD Artwork Guidelines section of the product pages on our site for the exact size and position of each UPC.

The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a 12-digit number that uniquely identifies your title and allows retailers to order and sell your [CHOOSE: CD / DVD]. You may use the UPC CreateSpace supplied for your title when it was set up. There is no additional charge for the UPC CreateSpace assigns your title. CreateSpace owns the UPC and it may only be used while you are using our service.
