That's a pretty broad question. You might have better luck if you've looked over some the specific areas of the forum and then focus your question to specific topics. What you do next depends on a number of things and there is no cut and dry answer. Deciding which direction to head first is entirely up to based on your goals and outcomes.

Kimberly is right. That is a very broad question. You could go many different directions at this point.

I would make sure your business and marketing plans were in order so you know what you want to do and how you need to get there. I would make sure you have your forms in place - agreements, invoices etc. When you get your first client, you don't want to be stumbling around looking for an agreement. You want to be ready to go. Make sure you have a stack of business cards printed and ready to go. Make sure you are set with your social networking sites - Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. Start Twittering with fellow VAs and your niche group. Join your local Chamber of Commerce and start networking.

These are just a few things you could be doing. I'm sure others can add to this list.

It is a lot of hard work getting to where you want to go, but it can be a lot of fun and very rewarding. Good Luck!

Also as already mentioned, do some research here on the site and have all your documents in order.. agreements, invoicing, time tracking.

I have found a few free advertising sites that might be helpful for getting people to your website:

www.craigslist.com
www.kijiji.com
www.linkedin.com a good way to show your skills to this network of people looking for work and people looking for you.
http://jobs.freelanceswitch.com/
http://www.skillwho.com/

I hope that helps

Take care,
Andrea

Angel, I think I did things in the same order: I created a website and then wondered what to do next. :-)

It is a broad question but I can tell you what I did (and what I am still doing).
I did not point anyone to the website - yet -- I am still tweaking it, plus I wanted to narrow my focus, fine tune my services and explore billing issues and best practices. So I now read this forum on all those things and incorporate this new knowledge into my site and my draft marketing material. When i have something I like, then I will go live.

I wanted to be able to talk the talk when asked and I felt I had so many questions myself. I hope that helps.

The best place to start is the Master List right here on the forum! This will help you get your 'ducks in a row' and waddling in the right direction (click on the words master list for the link)

I agree with the others..there are so many areas to go from here..

Creating your business plan
Determing w/IRS are you going to be a sole proprietor, LLC, Corp,
Reseraching Tax info for small businesses
Marketing, Marketing, Marketing Your business
Creating RFP's, contracts for services
Bank accounts for the business
Preparing yourself for the first client, the questions they will ask..so much

The list can go on. The idea about the master list area will be very helpful for you on this site. I found it helpful for me as well!

I wish you much success as you grow and cultivate your business!

I'm starting up a new biz myself - does the list *ever* end? the master list proved to be very helpful. I agree establishing contacts through twitter. Not sure about facebook at this point. I'm sticking with twitter for contacts, rather than marketing at this point.
