What's the best way to track & organize research?
Hi there!

I am really needing a good system to organize my thoughts when I'm doing research online. Let's say I'm visiting multiple websites and l want to visit them later - if I just "add" them to my favorites in my browser, that's not enough for me. I need to remember to go to those favorites. I have many categories, so I need something simple, yet effective. What's worked for you? Thanks for your help!!!

Hi Rosie,
I have the same problem. I just send myself a link from that Webpage to my email account. For links I want to stand out, I give them a 'red flag' or an exclamation point. (I use MS Live mail). This works for me. Hth

If you don't have PDF creator you need it for web research. As a software researcher, I'm able to capture screenshots of pages, make notes and highlight areas of the screen. For example, just recently I was deciding which email marketing program I wanted to purchase. I visited multiple sites captured each screen as a seperate sheet in PDF creator and saved the file as Email Marketing Software Research. Now at a later date I can go back to my research and check out the site.

Let me know if you'd like the link?

I organize my favorites into Categories and then subcategories. This way I don't have a long list of items to go back and look at. If I want to go back and look at a training website I saved I can go right to it. I also use OneNote if I don't want to save the entire site but maybe a snipet of information then I copy and paste to my OneNote. The I can organize my notes accordingly.

Amy, I like the way you organize things. I have OneNote but never used it. I usually paste to a Word document. Just wondering how OneNote works?
Thanks

Jo-Carole,

I like this idea, but my problem is that once I send it to myself, I have to remember to look for it in my flurry of emails - do you have a method of reminding yourself (or organizing yourself)? Thanks for your help

Jo-Carole,

I am in no way an expert in OneNote but I have the program and I had read some posts that people utilized it. I did a quick tutorial and it really works like a spiral notebook that has tabs. You have a tab for each project or subject and from there you can create subcategories, etc. I have one for home, one for my business which has alot of tabs (terms and conditions, website info, rates, etc.), and then I have one for my mom's business.

When I am on a website and I see something interesting I can copy and paste it into One Note. It will also capture the name of the website I took it from so I can go back to the site if needed. I have also used it for notes as well which was great b/c I just clicked a button and sent them via email as a PDF.

It is a great resource if you have the program. I have stopped hand writing my notes and try to utilize OneNote as often as possible.

Everyone will find the organizational tools that work for them. What works for one may not work for another but I love this site b/c I have tried some new things and love it.

I have everything under research by topic in my favorites. I keep all favorites in separate folders so that I always have it right there. I also print out articles I find that have alot of helpful information and then put them in the clear sleeves in binders. I only have the one binder at the moment, but soon it will all be separated by topic into separate binders. One for marketing, one for Website tips like SEO, etc. These will be my handy quick references so I don't have to flip between windows and tabs on the computer when I am in the middle of doing something.
