Virtual Assistant Training, Is it required?
Hello Everyone,
I'm trying to learn as much as possible about this industry and I see alot of schools offering training in this industry. Do any of the more experienced VA's feel as though getting a certificate in VA necessary? Do you companies requiring this information?
I would really appreciate any input on this subject.
Thank you,
Shawna

Re: VA School, Is it required?
Hi Shawna,
Welcome to the forums. I have noticed a few of these certifications and class offerings coming around lately. I do not have certification as a VA however I think that my more then 12 years of experience in my field as well as just about 2 years as a business owner is proof of my credentials.
I am not sure that getting certifications at this point in the VA industry is necessary.
I am sure others will chime in with their opinions.
Good luck in your ventures.
Kim

Re: VA School, Is it required?
Hi Shawna, I agree with Kim and think she made good points. In my experience, clients or potential clients aren't familiar with the certifications or what they mean or what was required to get them...so, they are kind of meaningless to those that aren't familiar with them.

Re: VA School, Is it required?
I don't feel its necessary for an aspiring VA to get certification unless they want to specialize in a specific area, such as Microsoft. I have an Associate Degree of Applied Business from KSU, plus I've owned a home-based business for several years and using these as credentials.
I'd suggest that you start out an intern. You'll be working for free but learning for free in exchange. I believe working as an intern is the best way to educate yourself.
Good luck in your decision!

Re: VA School, Is it required?
Hi Shawna,
I don't think certification is necessary. I still have to explain what we do I don't think anyone is going to be asking for certification. I did take a course through the VA classroom to learn about being an internet marketing VA. Great course. Tonight I start training on how to market my business. Our industry is constantly changing and we need to keep up with the changes just as if we were to take classes to advance ourselves in the corporate world.
Thanks,
Beth

Re: VA School, Is it required?
Hey Shawna,
I am so glad you asked that question. I am in the same position you are in and have been wondering if I should get certified before I move forward in the business. Although I plan on continuing to learn though various classes, I feel more confident now without concentrating on certification. Thanks to all for your thoughts.
Blessings,
Lonnie

Re: VA School, Is it required?
I agree with the others who have replied. I don't believe certification is necessary. But, I also believe in continuing education at all times. If you are not going to go through any type of training school, I would definitely begin signing up for webinars that come your way. The more you learn, the better equipped you will be as you begin acquiring those new clients. Many of the forums have free or low-cost seminars and webinars so sign up. It's well worth your time to learn about marketing, Internet trends, etc.

Re: VA School, Is it required?
Hello,
I don't think that VA certs are necessary. If you plan to spend money on continuing education, I think that taking a Photoshop course or a web design course would be money better spent.

Re: VA School, Is it required?
I agree with the others however if you feel certification will better help you then go for it. I am not certified as a VA but I do regular participate in continuing education. Both the paid and free courses.
I would recommend if you are going to spend the money use it to enhance skills that could use a boost or to learn a new skill.
Best of luck to you.
