Start date
Lordy I have no idea where to put this so I'm sticking it here...anyone with the ability feel free to move if it shouldn't be here!

For those of you who have been at this for a while please tell me what you consider your start date? When your first client "signed", when you launched your website, when you got your first payment, when you made the mental decision, when you filed some specific paperwork, when you opened your checking account? The possibilities are endless! Probably no right or wrong answer either but at least some input might help me decide!

Make it a great day!

Hi Sundi
Great question!

I guess I consider my 'start date' to be when I contracted and started working with my first client but I can see how if that had taken a while and I had been marketing and working on my business for months before that I'd want to use the date I opened my virtual doors as a measuring stick instead...

I use the date that I registered my business, because that was one of the first things I did. I had a client in place when I started. Since everything happened all around the same time I figured it was just easier to use the date I registered.

I am always stumped on this one myself. I only officially registered my name and realized there was a VA industry in the fall. But, I have been working virtually for 3 years now. So which date should I use?

Our business name was registered December but we 'announced' our opening last Thursday to our family, friends and contacts. This now feels like our real start date.

Good question - I think for me my start date will be when I'm ready and advertising for my first clients. Before that I will do plenty of prep work (set up bank acct, register business name etc) but until I am ready to take on a client I won't consider myself to have really "opened" for business.

In my case that is partially due to a restriction on earning income until a certain time period.

Good luck deciding a date!

I use the date that I registered my business as that is considered its legal date of inception.

Great question. Let's see I started writing my business plan in February and finished in March. Registered my business, opened business bank account, organized my office, registered domain and printed business cards in April. But I consider my start up date to be May 1st, because that is when I was officially ready to take on clients. That's also the date that I joined my referral networking group.

I already had a client before I even registered my business with the county. Just recently I had another client wanting my web hosting service. But I've told them to wait or find someone else because I haven't had gotten everything else prepared.

So, in my case, I'm guessing I'd say my first day of business is when I am ready to take in clients and offically open my virtual door to the public, ie website, etc.

Interesting thread by the way!
