I tried many of freelance sites when I was first starting out and never got any leads from them. Nor did I fork our any money to upgrade my accounts either. Referrals and word-of-mouth have been the most successful way of garnering business. It takes time, but I would accept jobs on a project basis like any other freelancer if they came up too, which was more at the beginning than now.
