Online Education gaining popularity
This link is from the NYTimes and I am glad to hear that online education is gaining in popularity. I would rather learn from home than go back to my local college, especially in the winter. How do you feel everyone, prefer online or brick and mortar classrooms?

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
I prefer online learning. I finished up my bachelor's (2 years worth) online with my University (St. Leo University) and I loved it. My only complaint was I felt like there was a lack of that "communal particiapation" where you got to know others in your class and felt that the class was a cohesive unit - instead it was just log on, discuss in forums as you need to and move on.
But, it worked for me and my schedule and it was the absolute only way I'd ever be able to have obtained my bachelors!

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
I'm starting an online bachelor's degree program in just over a week. The program I'm going through has small online class sizes, about 12 in my class, and we work together on projects throughout the whole program. It's an accelerated program, and each class is 4 weeks long. 12 people start in class 1, and move onto class 2 together, and so on. The hope is, of course, that all 12 will graduate together as well. I'm hoping that the collaborative nature of the program will help to overcome some of the isolation that Jonna talks about, which seems to happen in a lot of online programs.
I was going to a traditional campus program a couple of years ago, but as my life has changed and evolved, I need the flexibility provided by the online program, even if this one does have strict weekly deadlines. My assignments may be due on specific days, but when I actually do those assignments, tutorials, videos, lectures, etc., will be entirely up to me.

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
I have actually been going to college for the past several years and started by doing all online courses. However, over the last few semesters there were some courses where I had to go on campus and you know what? I liked it! However, I balanced it out, so if I took two courses a semester, one was online and the other on campus.
This coming semester I am taking two courses and both are on campus and I am so looking forward to it. Especially because one of the courses I am taking is Music Recording -- so I think I will get to learn how to use in-studio recording equipment The other is Spanish and well, I have tried taking online Spanish course before -- for me -- learning a language in a classroom setting works.
It really all depends on your learning style and sometimes the topic at hand. The one thing that always stays the same for me is that simple fact that I LOVE to learn.

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
Interesting that some areas don't lend themselves so well to online learning. For me, the internet courses have been perfectly wonderful. Did y'all see this post by Seth Godin recently, talking about free education?

There aren't many areas that I can think of that wouldn't do well online. As I said, language, for me at least, is one of them. Also, maybe cooking class wouldn't do so good online, as it would really help to have the teacher right with you to tell you if your food tastes awful!

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
Some online courses I have taken worked well online and I loved them... like English, Multimedia and learning things on my own through iTunes University and the like.
There is one course I would live to take -- Ben & Jerry's ice cream course. Now THAT is one I would definately want to do in person

Interesting article by Seth Godin, Mary. I will be curious to see how education changes over the next few years and whether free education will indeed implode education as we know it as Seth suggests. Interesting indeed.

Re: Online Education gaining popularity
I love doing online courses. Like the others it doesn't interfere with my work. I have to say I never heard of the Ben & Jerry's class. I would love to take it too lol
