Default Hubby interested in working from home.
My husband is interested in working from home too.

He does... um... honey? what do you?

....

uhh... ok.... basically website stuff.

Enough being cute.
He's put together the back end of websites, databases, back-up, ...
He knows HTML, Pearl, Ruby Rails(little) and Python. ummm... some other stuff too.

Basically I'd like to know what he would call himself when offering services and what services are needed out there? Is he a Web Designer, tech maintanence, site support? He doesn't design the sites per-say but if you give him a picture of what it should look like he can make-it-so.

Also would he need to learn how to use Wordpress? Or any other big software programs?

I'd kind of like to get a big list ready for him so I can show it to him and help him make the decision eaiser.

Thanks for any help any of you can give.

Kim.

Hi Kim,

I would suggest that you take a look online at any number of website designer websites, click on services to see what it is that they offer.

I'm not a designer but I work with them on client projects. I think that being a designer is much more than building a site with code. Many designers I work with have SEO background and create the sites to position the client/customer to receive the best google juice for their industry.

As for you other titles mentioned, it sounds as if your husband could do more of the site maintenance but I rarely see people who do just that service and offer nothing more. In other words most web designers offer web maintenace.

I do not have the answers to your other questions but WordPress is definitely a contender for new customized websites.

Hi Kim -

Is your husband looking to work remotely or start his own business? Depending on what he is looking to do will determine what he calls himself. There are many software developers/programmers, etc. that work from home as a freelancer and/or contractor. If that's the case, then I would recommend that he look at Indeed.com, Freelance.com, Elance.com, Guru.com as well as the most common job boards to determine what his interests are. At that point he can bid on contracts or speak with staffing agency/headhunters for remote/telecommute projects.

However, if he's looking to start his own business then I would recommend he make a list of all the services he'd like to provide. Do a search online to see what types of companies offer those services and what titles do they have for the owners and/or staff. When you own a business, you determine your title. He can be Founder of XYZ Technologies or Web Designer, Software Programmer, Programming Specialist, etc.

Good luck to you and your husband

If your husband can take what someone has created and make it into a website that is generally called Web Development, though web development and web design are often inter changed.

I'm stronger on the web development side of things than the design (giving the site the look) and often work in conjunction with a designer to achieve the look someone is looking for.

Your husband sounds like he has a lot of coding experience and so if that is the case he could offer his services as a web developer and coder, even programmer. Has he created any of his own programs, plugins or apps?

I don't know enough about it, but I personally see a huge market for people with skills to develop apps for the growning mobile market and suspect that there is lots of opportunity to be a freelancer and offer that. Not sure if you husband has those types of skills, but that's another area to think about.

Also if he knows enough CSS, PHP etc he can create his own Wordpress Themes to offer as both free and for sale.

If you do a bit of searching online you'll find some information about doing those kinds of things.

I'd also suggest checking out Freelance Folder, Freelance Switch, Web Desginer Depot and Smashing Magazine, Sitepoint - lots of great information there about freelancing and web design as well as everything else that goes along with it.

Great thing is much of his skill set is in demand right now so he should be able to make the transition.
