Default How do you know when to open for business
Okay, I have been working on my business plan, updating my computer skills and getting my office set up and now I am wondering if I am ready or should I still work some more. My question is: How did you know you were ready to go get clients?

I got my start by working with a woman who needed help with her client database. She had posted an ad on Craigslist and I answered it thinking to myself that it would give me an opportunity to test my virtual services. I had nothing set up as far as a business but had been kicking it around for awhile. It has worked out great, a mutually beneficial relationship. She knows I'm now getting my business going and is very happy to have played an instrumental part (and get her database cleaned up!) I don't charge her my rate but figure it is worth it for the education and time to get my confidence up.

Actually, I'm still getting my business set up and clients just happened. I really wasn't ready for the first one but I winged it and everything is working out just fine. I think setting up a business is an ongoing task because there will always be something that needs done so let clients happen whether or not you feel you are ready.

You sound like you are well on your way. If you feel comfortable at this point then open your doors. You can begin by looking for a client who needs a few hours or a project just to get your feet wet. Or you can go full blown if you feel you are ready. No time like the present.

I responded for an ad for a VA on Craigslist right away. I figured since it was the client's initiative, I could work on it while working on it.

I don't know what the right way to do it is, but I didn't want to pass up a great opportunity because I wasn't ready to do what I've been doing for years.
