Default Headshots...Looking for an article on the importance of having a professional shot or not?
Hello All,

I have a brand new client who is starting out from scratch. I've asked her for professional headshots that I can use to set up her varying accounts but she doesn't have one. She's asked me why a headshot is important and I've explained but I wanted to give her more information, which I haven't been able to find online.

Or, maybe it is not important to have a headshot...what do you think?

Does anyone have a link to a blog or an article which explains the importance of having a headshot for PR?

Thank you.

Janine

I know that coaches, writers, real estate agents and lawyers all have professional head shots. I guess it depends on what her field is, if she should need one or not.

Here is an article I just put together. Let me know if it helps.

Why do I Need a Professional Head Shot?
A headshot commonly encompasses a subject's head and shoulders, with the focus being almost completely on the subject's face. However, some "headshots" can often include as much as 3/4 of the subject's body (called a "three quarter" shot).

An 8"x10" headshot is essentially "a business card" which is represents you and your company.

A good headshot is intended to market a person and their professionalism, "as they are" but in as positive light as possible, accentuating the subject's best qualities. A good headshot will often provide the viewer with a glimpse into the person's character.
A headshot is almost 100% of the time the absolute only thing a potential client has to judge you by.

Real Estate agents, Lawyers, Coaches and Writers all use headshots to help people know who they are working with.

There's a lot of online talk about how your profile picture should be of you and not you + someone else, not your logo, not something cute or clever. And this makes total sense.

In these times of huge internet participation, though, I don't think it's required/expected that all business people will have a professional headshot. Though, as stated, many professions do hold to that convention (realtors, coaches, etc.) What I observe is that the more successful, established people (in whatever field) will have professional photos. Nonetheless, there's a benefit to being casual, un-stuffy-looking.
The ultimate is to have a professional quality photo without a professional quality look, IMHO!

Hi Mary,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.

What I am looking for is information on using any head shot photograph...any photograph (preferably well-taken...doesn't have to be taken by a professional photographer) for websites.

The new client doesn't have any photographs at all so I explained that the use of a photo offers the viewers a chance to 'see' someone and put a face with the company. It's an opportunity to personalize a business. But that argument didn't seem to hold much weight so I am looking for some kind of article or blog that I can reference which supports that belief. I found some articles for actors but not for business people.

Thank you.
